I have a 1997 (off the top of my head) BF50, ever since I purchased the boat/engine, if I try to to a quick take off (accelerate quickly) the engine stall out and most of the time dies. Sometimes when I try to accelerate less quickly the same happens. Any assistance is appreciated.

Re: BF 50 dies when Accelerating

These engine have an accelerator dashpot. It prevents the engine from starving for fuel when the throttle is opened suddenly from idle. My engine may also stumble on sudden acceleration from idle when not warmed up properly.
I have not found a comprehensive explanation of the accelerator dashpot circuit but, accelerator pumps perform the same task in carbureted cars if you want to read a bit more about why they are needed.
The accelerator dashpot is at the rear port side of the engine and it looks like, well, it looks like a dashpot. Search "anti stall dashpot" to see a dashpot in an automotive application.
The Honda accelerator dashpot is activated by a cam on the throttle linkage. There is an adjustment procedure, but I can't see the adjustment going very bad. I would start by looking for a linkage problem or perhaps a problem with the hoses connected to the dashpot.
