I've got a Honda BF2 auxilary outboard here, it's a bit too long for my boat. I was looking at it and it looks like it's got an extender in the shaft part:

Is it just a case of unbolting that, removing it and putting the bottom part (gearbox/prop piece) back on?

Nope, the internal drive shaft is a single complete shaft, so that needs to be replaced with a shorter one (not sure how hard/easy that would be) in order to shorten it.

It's already a short shaft! Why do you feel it neeeds to be shorter than it is now??

From the pics it looks like the motor isn't too long/ deep, it even looks a little short to be honest.

Thje pictures are with the mount bracket all the way up. If I put the bracket down it is significantly lower.
The reason I would like the shaft shorter is that it would then be more out of the way and no draging behind the boat as much.
