Just got a pontoon with a 2004 Honda BF25d engine and want to change the impeller. Haven't had time yet to get a manual (the dealer didn't have one). What are the steps for removing the lower unit? Does the shift rod have to be disconnected by the power head? Should it be in F-N or reverse? Thanks for any help, would like to get her on the lake this weekend.

Re: BF25D impeller change

If it is like my 15hp there is a shift rod that has a threaded nut about 3/4" and a jam nut about half way down the leg, you will be able to see it. Providing it was not cross threaded when installed, (I say that because mine was, never did get it loose so had to remove the pin under the carb.) loosen the small jam nut and take it loose. Watch where the jam nut was at so you can hook it back up at the same distance. The rest is pretty basic is you have ever changed an impeller.

Hey GSS

I have to change the impeller on my 1999 9.9hp Honda too........

Are you talking about the nuts that are located half way down the shaft.....about a hand's length from the propeller?

thanks for the info.............

YES, that is your shift linkage. It has to disconnected in order to drop the gear box. Should only be 4 bolts holding your gear box on the 9.9.

To GSS036

Thanks for your input. My Honda 30 needed work yesterday and there is no human way to remove cotter pin at top of shaft. I had wondered about the coupler possibility for removal. Will try.

Re: BF25D impeller change

Believe it or not, it is humanly possible to get the carter key out and back in. I had to do mine that way because the factory crossthreaded the nut, even after getting it off and in a vice, I was unable to get it loose, so put it back the same way. They had had also crossed threaded one of the lower end bolts. That took 3-4 times as long to remove as the whole job. But got it back together ok and running ok.
I have got anothe rproblem, but is so inconsistant that I can't locate the cause. It just slows down to a chug-chug-chug about 1 second apart, then runs great. Had it out on Thursday and it ran great for six hours.
