I stand corrected on that point.

However it is still speculation as to whether the rust had anything to do with anything. The ONLY things we know for sure are that the trailer came loose for an UNKNOWN reason, and it didn't have safety chains. I'll say it again. ANYTHING more than that is speculation.

It came loose because of:

1. Defective equipment
or
2. Operator error

We can take the post as a reminder that trailers and trailering can be dangerous if equipment is not in good, safe operating condition and the operators are not properly trained and paying attention to what they are doing.

I believe this is why the OP posted the link in the first place.

Things brings up a discussion that a coworker and I had about drivers licenses and people's understanding of automobiles.. It seems to me that all licensed drivers should at least understand the basics of how an automobile functions, as well as be able to change a tire. Also, maybe all licensed drivers should be required to gain a certification to tow a trailer, of any size?? To acquire the trailer plate you'd have to take a short test?? If a person is towing they should understand the basics of towing safety. Just a thought.

I'm on your side, but I don't think it will ever happen. At least the part about knowing how an automobile functions and how to change a tire. They won't even pass laws against cell phone use while driving.

As for trailering, yes, I'm all for it. When I got my first trailer boat, I got stuck in the dealer's parking lot. Then I almost got stuck at the toll both on the way home. I stopped in a vacant parking lot and tried to practice. Then some teenagers on skateboards came over and tried to give me pointers.

When I got home I had to get the neighbor to back the boat in the driveway for me.

That weekend, he took me to the local high school parking lot and drilled me. He was a fire department trainer at the time.

After an hour or so, I was pretty good at it and got better as time went on.

A trailering endorsement should be required on the drivers license just as a motorcycle endorsement is required in many states.

The extent of stupidity on the part of some never ceases to amaze me. True story last year I'm looking at a nice boat at a ramp next to where I fish as I watch the owner loading the boat the hitch is jumping around I walk over to my truck and pull my 2" ball and tell the guy trade ya 10 min.s and a pipe wrench later sent him on his way keeping his 17/8" My wife asking why I did that,my reply cause It's gonna be a poor slob like myself that hits it when it comes loose. As the guy is pulling away another fella comes up and hands me $10.00 turns out he's the local harbor cop and quote "Don't worry I'll get it back he's a regular" Thanks
