I have a few questions,
I found a REALLY BIG Bayliner on craigslist.
This thing has got to be 35' or better. It's sitting on a Tri axel trailer
But I am wondering what model this thing could be. The guy says he'll
trade it. It has a Volvo motor (inboard) it is a cabin cruiser of some sort.
Sleeps six full bath, kitchen, Etc. I am wondering what kind of mileage
this beast would get. As well as how it would handle in the ocean.
I don't know ANYTHING about boats, I've never owned one. I was looking for
a sailboat, But a 1963 30' the guy wanted 34,000 bucks wood hull and all.
But I would be liveing on this full time. Now I live in a cabover camper.
I am in californicator, And would like to sail up the coast to seattle to
visit relitives. (and make em' drool) Any help would be helpful. Thanks

Re: BIG BAYLINER Would You get this?

Why stop at a 30' sailboat(!) or 35' powerboat (tho as you said, it might be longer 'cuz it looks really big) for your first-ever boating experience?

I'd look at something big enough to store my cab-over camper aboard, in case I have guests. Used car ferries crop up occasionally on Craigslist. Make sure the transom and stringers are in good shape. Change the water pump impeller if you don't know when that service was last performed.

For your maiden voyage you might want to consider a run to Hawaii- it'll be great practice, but I'd take a safe boaters course beforehand.

Good luck and have fun!

Ok bro...

Heres my 2 lincolns..
Thats a lot of boat for never owning a boat before...And running up the coast from (depends on where in Cal?) to Seattle is not easy..big water out there and pretty rough especially in some of the No Cal waters...

Boats don't really get mileage..they get "range"...and fuel is consumed in Gallons Per Hour and sumthing that big would burn a lot..

You'd have to be on the water multiple days...navigate to marinas, refuel...learn the waterways and maritime markers...

Its kinda like me not knowing anything about planes..but saying I am looking at a sweet 747 that I wanna fly to Europe...

Seriously do not pursue this, not yet at least...

Yep, thats a big boat. Yep, its a very nice boat, and big Bayliners enjoy a very good reputation in the yacht world. Yep, it will make the trip up the coast no problem. Yep, the relatives will drool.

Nope, you will never make it having no boating experience.

Send me your basic info, name, address, age, ssn, etc. I want to take a life insurance policy out on you. :D

You should buy it, and turn it into a motor sailor! It's easy, just go to Harbor Freight and buy 40 or 50 of their cheap tarps and you're set.

One thing no one has mentioned, wood hulls are HIGH MAINTENACE compared to fiberglass.

Not really, you can just let barnacles attach to the hull and they will seal it, making it water tight.
