I have a 1993 175 Evinrude Spitfire. Yesterday (2nd time out) this year I had a oil low alarm. The boat started losing power and dropped down to very low RPM. I was on a large area lake and tried to get it back to the dock, about 1.5 miles. The boat stopped and would not restart. The starter sounded like it locked up. I got towed back in and today I pulled the oil reservoir. (it appeared full) until I got it out from behind the battery. It had about a 1/2 gallons of water in the bottom with the new fresh oil I had added and thought I filled to the top. I drained the oil hose and the mixer on the front of the motor.
I pulled the plugs and and tried to start it after adding oil to the fuel in the tank to make sure it was getting lube. The starter will crank now but just for a short time before it stops. In gear I can only turn the prop by hand about 1 1/2 turns before it stops. It will then reverse 1 1/2 turns and stops. My guess is I seized the engine. Does anyone else have a opinion.

If I'm understanding you correctly, water was in the VRO so essentially, the motor was run without oil?

If so, I would remove the heads to look for cylinder wall damage. You may have a blown piston with metal pieces causing the motor to bind or other damage in the crank case.

I personally would start first with the heads.

Sounds like you have fried something. Whip the heads off and give the tops of the pistons a good looking at. Look at the condition of the plugs on each cylinder. Take a good look at the cylinder walls.
Sounds more like you have "popped" a rod though.
How did the water get in the oil tank ???

Thanks guys I'll check the heads first, As far as the water in the tank I can only guess. I bought this boat last year in the fall. I used it several time thou without any issues. I did replace the starter as the brushes were bad. you can't see the tank in this boat. I have been checking the oil but can only look down through the lid. It looked full the entire time because the oil was floating on top.

When you get it sorted, relocate the tank or change to premix.
Good Luck.

Pulled off the head and two pistons are damaged rings too. don't know about the shafts or bearings. Could this be rebuilt cheaper than buying a rebuilt powerhead ????

don't know till you get futher into it. presently you have moisture, on the crank and bearing, which will start to rust also.
