Hi BonairII. Read this link and you'll have that 'ol Big Twin back up and running in no time.

^^^This!^^^ There are some excellent articles on rebuilding vintage OMC outboards on here, one of which goes through carb rebuilding. Those old OMC's are pretty simple and easy to work on once you get to know your way around them. They aren't exactly fuel sippers though.

Yep....I read that article. I just can't figure out if the flywheel needs to be taken out to loosen the 'cam' so I can adjust it.

no experience with the big twin...others of that era have 2 screws , 1 in a slot that allows you to move the cam forward or backward, 1 to be loosened so the cam will rotate, both you can get to if you advance the armature plate to ~ wot..look under the flywheel and you'll see them...a pita to get to, but doable...as the roller reaches the highest point on the cam, the throttle plate should be horizontal in the carb throat

Hi BonairII. I used to have a '66 33hp Big Twin and she ran great. No wonder you're not getting proper WOT, you carb is missing virtually every seal and gasket it needs!!!! For starters, no, you don't have to remove the flywheel to adjust the throttle cam, but the two little screws/bolt under there can be pesky to reach unless you have a 90 degree screwdriver or small socket. You may have to spend a few buck on a small enough tool to get in there, but it'll be worth it. (I believe the were 5/16" bolts on mine, if memory serves?) You don't need/want to remove them. Just loosen them, adjust the plate according to the lync-n-sync instructions and snug them back down. To answer your other questions. Yes, the butterfly valve should basically be level at WOT (i.e. "Wide Open" Throttle). As you found out, there is a little linkage on the side that can be adjusted to help control this. Between that and the cam adjustment the butterfly valve will open fully and properly. Make sure you're testing the linkages for WOT as there is an armature that prevents WOT while in neutral. As for the carb itself, you definitely must get a carb rebuild kit!!! You're missing virtually everything. It will have all the necessary washers, seals and packings you'll need. It will come with packings for your hi/lo needles, a new bowl gasket (and/or glass bowl gasket if yours has a glass bowl on the carb), a new float needle and float needle arm, a new hi speed nozzle where the float arm needle seats itself (item in your third picture down), it will also come with a white nylon washer that goes at its base. As well as a new throttle body gasket, b/c yes there should be a gasket between the carb and the engine block. You've had air leaks all over the place for all this time and it only take very slight adjustments to the fuel:air mix to make a very large difference in your motor's performance. You can get the kit right here at iboats for about $25. You'll also want to get a new, plastic replacement float, if your kit does not come with one. Your old, cork float is falling apart and can/will/is clogging up your passages. Yes, it should be level when it is properly installed and the carb is inverted. Once you get all the parts, do a couple searches on rebuilding a carb and follow the directions that come with the kit. They're actually quite good. Report back and let us know what you find. Good luck.

sweet. Once you get it you'll see where all the bits go and you'll be amazed at what a difference they make. Just make sure all the passages are super-duper clean and clear before you start to reassemble. Just follow the directions in the kit and you'll be fine. keep us posted.

Update: Got the correct carb kit today. Lots of little O-ring gaskets that I had no idea where they went :( Kit didn't include needle packing, so I have no idea what to do to keep needles from vibrating out.

Changed out needle seat assembly and float. And installed the main gaskets etc. Put back on the motor and fired it up. It seems to run pretty smooth. Won't know if I've solved my WOT problems til I can run it on the river/lake.
I'll update after it's been on the water.

Hello again BonairII. All those little o-rings ARE the packing for the hi/lo speed needles! You need to remove the old packing and install the new packing, then tighten down the brass nut/bushing that the needles pass through to prevent the needles from vibrating loose. A dental pick is handy for getting the old packing out. There should've been directions for in the carb kit that show the proper order for installing the packing and needles, but if not check out these links. Read them closely. They can walk you through installing the packings and setting the idle once you're on the water. You're almost there. If all goes well you'll be zooming around the lake this weekend!!!!

No directions with the kit, so I was just winging it. Not sure WHICH of the O-rings is the packing. Going to be tough getting the packing nuts off cause I tried before and they didn't seem to want to budge. I guess I'll spray some liquid wrench on them now and try getting them off in the morning.

Hi BonairII. I circled the packing in this pic. I hope it helps. I'm not sure of the exact year of your motor, but these old Big Twins didn't change much over the years. I believe I found the correct carb kit. The nut should come out fairly easily, but if they're stubborn, be patient. You don't want to damage them. They may just be gunked up. I believe they're 7/16". Here's a link to an exploded diagram of your carb (or one very similar to it). Pay special attention to numbers 71-76 and 43, 44, 46 on page 8 and their description on page 9. If you look closely you'll see how they should all go together. You can look up the manual for your exact year while you're there too. Also, here's a clip on how to rebuild an OMC carb. The previous links have really good diagrams in them too. Between all of these you should be fine.

In the vid, I'm unscrewing the low speed needle. Is the silver sleeve that came out...SUPPOSED...to come out like that? I put a small black O-ring behind the sleeve and put back in the silver sleeve, the brass housing and low speed needle, but the needle is still loose. Am I putting the O-ring in the wrong place?
