Well, we dodged some weather and finally got back out yesterday and headed to a spot a few miles out from Bayport. The last time there we limited out on grouper, so our hopes were up. I ran into a fishing buddy at the mouth to our channel as he was rounding up some bait and invited him and his fishing buddy along. We ran out for about 45 mins..the change in the water color was impresive. From that slate grey green color to a cobalt blue that lets you know it's deeper and cleaner than the inshore stuff you just left behind.
We start out using cut squid to get the grunts biting, then we fillet a grunt or two and offer them up. I like to use grunt strips..hook em once and let them flap away in the current..kinda like waving hello to the grouper holing up there.
Then I almost always offer up a grunt head on a 60# rig spooled with Ande big game. Yeah I still like mono.
We kept up with the grunts and then the grouper got interested and started coming over the side. My buddies on the otehr boat were scoring as well.
Then came that unmistakable sound of line peeling off against an easy drag. The big grunt head had been picked up. But not by a big grouper. The fish headed out, constantly peeling line off the now set drag...Ande line was escaping from the TLD 25 at a pretty fast pace. I was off my feet and in the helm chair just hanging on when I realized I had yet to take a turn on the reel. More time passed and I tried..no luck. About 300 yds of line later the big shark surfaced, swung left and right, showering the water with spray. That's when the 100# fluoro leader let loose and he had his freedom. I awoke about 7:00 am, still feeling the ache in my arms, back and legs......damn!

Re: Big Shark

Shark must have been eaten by a huge billfish. :)

Re: Big Shark

lol, good times. We were camping and fishing on a key in ENP, catching black drum like crazy one night when my son's shark rod with 80lb braid started ripping off his Cabo, a big hammerhead/bull shark was taking line so fast that the wax coating they put on the braid was coming off like sawdust, eventually the line buried it self and broke off....after about 200 yards was gone.

Re: Big Shark

Sounds like a whole bunch of fun.

Great that you had a water show and got to see the monster before he or she went back to the depths.

Re: Big Shark

Great report. We saw a rather large Bull shark the other day while tubing with the kids.
