Big Twin 40 oil drain screen springs shot

I took apart the oil drain on my '63 Big Twin 40 today. I'm not sure how important it is to clean that, but I just got this motor and I'm going through it. I like to know where everything is at with a new motor/vehicle, plus I had the carb, starter, and generator mount off so it was pretty easy to get at.

There was quite a bit of gunk in the screens and the leaf backing plate was a little rusty, so I've got that all cleaned up now and I made two new gaskets. However, then I took the screens out to clean them, those little spring clips that hold them in place basically fell apart. I suspect that these are not real critical and that the screens will stay put without them, but I thought I'd ask about it.

Thanks!

Replace them. They were put there for a reason.

Have you ever replaced them, boobie?

I was talking about the spring clips, not the screens. When I used to find them dirty I left them in place and used carb cleaner or engine tuner to clean the screens and left them in place. I was to lazy to take the screens out and also didn't want the hassel of replacing the clips.

Well, that would have been a good thing for me to try, although I didn't really think I could do a decent job leaving the screens in place. Plus, the service manual shows the spring clips as separate items in the parts diagram.

Unfortunately, as it turns out, they are not available as individual parts. The leaf plate and screens came as a complete assembly (309093). I have not been able to find it anywhere online after about an hour of searching. I may have to improvise.

I do have a parts motor, however, so there's a chance I might be able to use the carb cleaner method to spray that one out if the screens are still intact. That motor sat a long time, however.

Some models that year use p/n 379093 and am not sure of your model. Check this out:

Man, that sure looks like it could be the same part. My service manual is for both the Big Twin and Lark so I'll bet it will work.

Thanks!

Many of the old parts are used in later motors, but the part number for them isn't the same. There is a pretty good chance that the spring clips that you need are still available.

Try www.sea-way.com. Its the largest OMC NOS warehouse in N. America.

Yes, the motor I'm working on is a 40352D. I also have a 40302D, and that was actually the parts catalog I was looking at. I'm surprised those numbers don't match. Good to know, though. Thanks for catching that, Willyclay.

Thanks for your input also, jay. I've become aware that some older part numbers have been superseded by other numbers. Is that what you're referring to? Also, is there any way to identify that a part from a newer motor is the same as one used on an older motor other than actually having it in your hands and comparing it? No "master cross-referencing list" somewhere?

Yes & yes. There are currently availabale parts with superceded parts numbers and there are parts currently available that fit on older motors.

I would just contact the folks at sea-way - they are very good at figuring these things out.

Re: Big Twin 40 oil drain screen springs shot

In case anyone's interested, I was able to salvage the leaf plate/screen out of the other motor and cleaned it will carb cleaner and light brushing using a tooth brush. That reminds me, I need to get a new tooth brush... Anyway, it was in much better shape than I expected.

By the way, Sea-way does have it for $20 and a couple of other places had it for $26 or so. Thanks to all who responded.
