On My 1969 40HP Big Twin there is a precleaner for the incoming air from a hole underneath the lower motor cowl. Should this be regularily rinsed in varsol and have some #30 oil applied to the sponge like other small motors? If so, how often?

Parts book calls this a silencer pad Bill. (I don't know...that's what they call it.... :) ) Anyways....won't hurt to make it a yearly routine to clean it and add a little oil to the pad. Doesn't have to be really saturated....just a little will do.

Thanks OBJ, I don't know how much silencing this does, but I think it certainly would catch a lot of airborn dust as it gets sucked up through the hole in the cowl. Mind you, out on the water there really shouldn't be much dust, but you never know...
