Big Twin leaf plate reassembly

I disassembled the leaf plate assembly on my '63 40 hp Big Twin so that I could inspect it and also to remove the old gasket material without the risk of damaging the lp valves. It all seems to be in excellent shape. Valves were very flat against the plate and no corrosion. Two questions...

Should I sand the surface of the plate? I was thinking I might wet sand it using WD-40 on a sheet of 360-400 paper laid on a very flat surface by sliding the plate back and forth.

Also, should I reassemble it dry or lubricate it first. If it should be lubed, what should I use? A fine coating of light oil maybe?

Thanks!

Don't bother sanding it. In fact, don't even monkey with the reeds. Oiled or dry really doesn't matter. Put it back together with a new gasket (dry) and leave it alone.
