Best day of owning a boat is the day you buy it and the day you sell it? No maam, no sir!

How about every day in between? My boat flooded friday, fixed and dry by sunday am and STILL had a blast. My first boat I boat 4 months ago - didnt start 3 weeks after I bought it -- STILL had a great time.

Take it with a grain of salt and remember -- your on the lake, life could be MUCH worse...

Money pit? Maybe -- however the most money I am spending is on upgrades to stereo etc... which im A-OKAY with!

rant over..

Re: Biggest boat lie.

I am having a little panic run through me right now. I am delivering my boat to its new owner tomorrow morning. I have had 5 great years in it that was capped off yesterday with spending several hours out playing with the new owners. I was given the okay by my wife to purchase a new (to me) boat. After much discussion, we decided to wait until this winter/spring to purchase it. The way my work schedule worked out, I am only going to have a few more times this summer to go out in it. Can't wait for the new boat, hopefully the winter will go by fast.

I don't know what I would do with all my money if I got rid of my boat.

As for never sell a boat until you have a replacement, a friend's dad told him, a monkey doesn't let go of one branch until he has his hands on another. It's so true; if you sell one planning to get another 'eventually" or even "soon" then the money evaporates, life interferes, and you go boatless.
The risk is that you end up keeping them both.

I think the same principle applies to girlfriends but I'm out of that business now. Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then...

Re: Biggest boat lie.

My best ever boat day was just yesterday, when my 12 year old daughter FINALLY decided she was no longer afraid to go on the boat. Very first boat ride, very first boat-based fishing trip, very first cast, WHAM! A keeper halibut. Now she wants to go every weekend, she even wrote it on the calendar.

I'm tearing up! Mostly cause now I got ALL THREE kids I can use to help convince my wife I should spend more time fishing!

Best family time ever. Will always have one. I agree with "This is my last boat" is a lie.

I would have to go with the biggest boat lie is that it always breaks and costs money. True I have had some issues with my new boat but my last boat which I bought new had 0 issues in the two years I owned it. Now that they are making runabouts with outboards this lessens the potential for things to break even more and lessens the seasonal maintance.

Re: Biggest boat lie.

Best day of owning a boat is the day you buy it and the day you sell it? No maam, no sir!

The old adage was true for the guy I bought mine from. He had purchased it from his boss in an owner-financed type arrangement. At first, they had it in a slip at their apartment complex and were apparently paying over $400 a month for the slip and another $250 a month to the boss. So, they moved it to a marina on the far side of the lake which was a lot cheaper, but then they were a 45 minute drive away (had to circle nearly the whole lake to get there). To top all that, they were moving in a month and had no trailer for it. It as an albatross for them.

I offered almost half of what the book value was despite the boat being in really good shape (only needed new props) and the guy pounced on it. He was esctatic. Apparently, I only offered him a few hundred more than what he owed on it, but since he could finally stop making payments and focus on moving he was greatly relieved.

As for me, I've used the boat almost every weekend since I got, only slowing to maybe once a month in Dec, Jan and Feb. The only bad day I've had with it was when I sucked water into the exhaust and got hydrolocked. No permanent damage from that though. I keep it in my neighborhood marina, so it's only a short golf cart ride away for me. I'll never be without a boat now that I know what I've been missing.
