Is there some law that requires the Administration to have a press conference to announce that the VP, on private recreation, private property, had an accident?

The media are outraged that they didn't get the word before a small city newspaper.

NBC is treating the "who knew what, when scandal" as a top story.

Gimme a break. You guys may think you run the country, but you don't.

(261)

Does the law require them to have a press conference for anything at all? No. So why bring it up like it means something?

Come on, the Vice President of the USA shot a man....badly enough to put him in the hospital. I agree the media is going a little overboard, but to call it a non-story is doing the same, imo.

Re: Biggest non-story of 2006

Why would it be a scandal? Didn't the guy get immediate medical attention? Were the proper authorities notified? I would think so in any case involving a gun shot wound, regardless of the circumstances......I don't think that they had to notify the media at all.......It would have come out anyway......There just pizzed that they got scooped...... TOO BAD! :p .....JK
You do have to admit that it is newsworthy, though.......

Maybe if the lawyer dies and the VP ends up with manslaughter charges, it won't be a non-story?

BBC Story

JB
I am with ya on this one. I am more concerened the VP got special priveleges from the game warden than anything.
but it seems the poor guy had a minor heart attack today, if you call any heart attack at 78 minor.
I pray the guy pulls through with no health issues.
but yes the press is way out of line on this.

While on my recent trip, I watched a lot of CNN Int'l. They run an add with Christiane Amanpour saying something like, "ultimately it is our job to make the world a better place". I probably have the quote slightly wrong, but they (CNN et al) honestly do not understand their role.

You're right, they don't run the country, they steer the world. Just ask them, they even brag about it.

It just tickles me to death that the BS networks got scooped, I have thought all along that the President ought to the scoop to friendly Papers and such. Wonder how they would feel if they were scooped everytime by something like the Crawford Tx. Times Hearld :D Wouldnt that just kill them to have to call Crawford every time they wonted the latest news. Naaaaaaaaaaaaa wouldnt work they would just make up thier own.

Certainly the accident is news. That was not my point.

"Who knew what, when, and why didn't you tell us first?" is the non-story.

(260)

While I agree that the media generally has no right to be notified, there's a balance and agreement they've got going with government. They don't ask hard questions and they print the FedGovCo spin as told to in exchange for notice of news and special access to the White House and officials.

Re: Biggest non-story of 2006

I will agree with you to this extent, JB. It should have been a non-story.

Had the VP (and the admin) got out front, and in a timely fashion, and said what happened, and how, expressed a little remorse or something, it probably would have been a non-story.

But the way it was/is being handled, is indicative of how this administration has an arrogant disdain for the press and the American people, and somehow seem to think that their actions are automatically above reproach and scrutiny.

This administration, especially the VP, seem to think he can operate in complete secrecy, and the public has no right to know what the heck they are doing. That is not how a democracy is supposed to work.

Sure there are things that need to be secret for security reasons. No doubt. But not all things all the time.

Re: Biggest non-story of 2006

What if he had wacked someone with a golf ball or hit a fellow hockey player with a puck? Would that have been a major story on the nightly news? Every night!!This is only hyped up inflated news because a GUN was involved. "Ohhhh see, we told you no citizen should be allowed to own such a horrible tool" Hunting is a sport just like any other. The media is soooooo leaning towards the left, they are like vultures just waiting for anything to pounce on regarding the present administration. It's almost comical. They can really make an a$$ out of themselves without trying. Anyone hear the press conference? That was a sideshow itself.
OK I'll get off my podium now.

Bill & Hillary Clinton kept the Vince Foster ordeal from the press for over 48 hours. There were no squeals from the peanut gallery then.

(15452)

Hey guys don't sell the national media short...if it wasn't for those investigative journalists down at NBC, sniffing out the skeletons in the closet {insert imaginary image of scooby-doo}, picking up the AP wire story released only 45 minutes after the story appeared on the Corpus Christi newspaper website, Cheney might have got away with it! You don't see this as a coverup? Why, without media attention, D!ck would have shot all the witn...sorry...got a little carried away there...

PW2, you sound just like those media jerks. All persons who had a right and need to know knew very quickly.

Their real gripe was that a local newspaper got the news first. They are not entitled to a gripe in my view, and their behavior is exceedingly arrogant.

(253)

Re: Biggest non-story of 2006

I wonder how this would have been handled if it had happened on LBJ's ranch 40 years ago: "What? Oh, that . . . Ya know, we told ole Harry to keep himself visible. What a hoot, huh? You should see the little marks. He won't do that again, heh, heh . . ."
