i do not think there is a remote canister but not sure...where would i check for it?<br />How could i over fill the stern drive oil when i filled from bottom and stopped when it flowed out the top?

I just fixed this same problem with my boat. Everytime I tipped the drive up, I had oil in the bilge the next morning. The cost of the seal itself was only about $15, but I spent $50 on the wrench to remove the retainer nut. It only took me about 2 hours to pull the drive, replace the seal and o-ring and put it all back together. It was not difficult at all, but you do need to take your time and be careful to put a reference mark as to the position of the nut and the shaft so you don't change the pre-load on the bearings when you tighten things back up. Also check the shaft where the seal rides and make sure it's smooth and not rough or rusted or you may find yourself with the same problem again very soon.
