All throughout this site I have read "to the lowest and rearmost location" for pump location.
If you have access to the bilge towards the bow, one needs to be located there also. This will be the lowest point when your not moving or at no wake and trolling speeds (especially with a V-hull). Example: my 24' Stamas (I/O) has 2 pumps, a 2000gph just forward of the engine and a 1500gph located below the step leading into the cabin. Both are on automatic switches with a manual override.
