Bilge Pump Question

I once had a RULE pump with a separate float switch along side of it. When I wanted to be sure that it worked, before leaving it for the week, all I had to do was to raise the float switch arm momentarily and listen for the pump motor to start. The boat was open at the transum, so the pump was easy to access.

I'm considering getting a Rule pump with an automatic (internal) switch.

Question: How can you test this type of pump for reassurance as I did with the separate float switch?

The true test that I do is fill the bilge up with about 2 inches of water and make sure everything is working including the float. The way you were doing it was a bit flawed in that if the float had a leak or crack in it then the float would fill with water too and not trip the pump. just take the plug out and drop a hose down there and fill it with 2-3 inches of water and make sure everything is working.

I would check if the pump has any mean of testing built in. If not call the manufacturer. I understand your worries but would not want to fill my hull with water weekly just to test a pump.

Most of the ones I have seen have a small tab on them that you can trigger the float switch.

Thanks Guys,
I'll look for that tap for testing. Rule's packaging dosen't say anything about it and I haven't looked for a tab, but I will the next time I look.
Filling the boat is an obivious solution but I don't want to go that route.
I was wondering if I installed the switch, will it turn on without water present, negating the need to push a tab, if it's there.
I'll probably have to contact the manufacturer(s).

You should have a 3 way switch with an automatic bilge pump, it would have a position for off, auto and manual. It won't tell you if the float works, but it will let you know if the pump itself works.

It only takes a minute to put 2-3 inches of water in your boat. It is the only way to for sure test it. I check mine this way 2 or 3 times a year. Nothing to it. It should have come with a switch that can either make it auto or manual. If your like me, i have mine on auto, but when i put it in the water I always turn it on manual just to check it.
