Bilge Pump Replace

I bought a new boat last weekend and it seems the bilge pump has gone out. I checked the switch, the fuse, and the wires and everything looks good...the problem is the bilge pump is located directly UNDER the Mercruiser 5.7 L engine! I have bought a replacement, the question is where would be the best place to mount it? Should I try to get it as close to the position of the non-working one? Somewhere easier to maintain/inspect/replace? Or does it matter? A friend of mine told me that as long as the float switch was below the batteries I would be fine...

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Bilge Pump Replace

I would pull the old one out and put the new one in the same spot. It's in that spot for a reason, it one of the losest points on the boat. Get the in pump in the same spot of as low as possible. The higher the float is the more water will stay in the bilge.

Re: Bilge Pump Replace

The issue is that I cant get to the existing bilge pump. I can just barely get my hand in there to feel the wiring connections. I cant get a tool in there and I tried twisting it to see if it would come out of some sort of housing but that was a no-go also. Putting the bilge pump in the same spot isnt going to happen....but I could put it about a foot towards the transom, which is actually slightly lower in most situations...I can reach in back there.

To me this is the most logical option, but I wanted to get advice beecause of exactly what you said, it is where it is now for a reason...

Re: Bilge Pump Replace

I have the same problem. I believe that it is shorting out one of the batteries, and needs to go. But I can't reach it (it's under the engine) to get to it, no less work on it. Any advice would be helpful!

Cut the wires and hose, install where you can reach ...
