bilge pump replacement

I have a 97 Capri 1954 and the bilge pump on this boat is not working. The pump is located directly under the engine and basically inaccessible. Is there any way to remove the old pump without pulling the engine? Does anyone have experience or advice on replacing this pump?

Just install a new pump that you can get to. Put it on a bracket or whatever it takes. Just forget about the old pump till you have to pull the engine for some reason.

Hey Blanco.
I have a 1995 Capri 1952' 3.0 I/O Alpha 1 with the same problem.
The boat is all tucked in for the winter and I need to replace this before my first outing. I have tried to get the old one out, but my arms are just a few inches too short. I can reach it barely but don't want to break anything by just ripping it out.
I think there are 3 clips holding it on.

I don't understand Don's reasoning. Why not just do it right?

Let me know if you had any luck replacing this. Photos would be sweet too!

There's nothing 'wrong' at all with Don's suggestion. The dead pump won't do any harm where it is, and you can put the replacement in a serviceable location. It's what I'd do, too.

Why spend hours and break your back over things that make no difference, only to be faced with the same effort next time around?

The fact that your arms are too short is a real problem you can't get around. Find a friend who has a skinny, tall teenager and enlist his services to get the old pump out.

This is a good pump to use when faced with a pump location mounted under the engine...

This a Whale pump, 500GPH, 3/4" discharge, can be rotated so the discharge goes to the side or exits on top, this pump is designed for those crappy I/O installs like yours. This one I have is brand new, if you're interested, pm me...
