bimini top

I just purchased a 2004 Sea Ray Sundancer that was kept outside this winter with the bimini top and camper encloser on. It was not shrink wrapped. I have noticed that during a heavy rain there is water penetrating the underside of the Sunbrella fabric. It is obviously no longer impermiable to water. Can the material be re-waterproofed or do I need to buy a new bimini top? It doesn't flood in, just drips.
Thanks.

Re: bimini top

There are a few options for spray-on water repellant. See your local camping store.

The larger issue is why is water sitting there long enough to come through? The top should be designed so water doesn't sit and runs off immediately.

Re: bimini top

Thanks. The boat is still on blocks so that perhaps that is why the water is sitting in one place. Is there any special tricks to spraying the top? How long should it dry? Should I spray it in the shade or full sunlight? Does it matter?

Re: bimini top

I suggest you use the products made for Sunbrella. this is the winter treatment procedure for biminis in my shop http://www.capecanvas.com

I use 303 products in my shop for sunbrella http://www.303products.com/

Clean with warm water and 303 cleaner, checking all stitching and zippers. Adress any probs now- a stitch in time saves 9... hundred dollars.

Soak with 303 fabric guard. One Wet complete coat. SOAK.

now you are waterproof

Let dry

Soak with 303 spaceage protectant, again, really soak it.

Now your stitching and sunbrella is protected from the uv which is what destroys enclosures. this is especially important for boats that leave their canvas up on moorings.

do not use jel or wax products on your zippers or fasteners- it ruins them by creating an abrasive paste and it is gross too.

Re: bimini top

no jel / wax for zippers snaps etc.

What you should use is fresh water (zip all your zippers up and down periodically so they don't freeze) and food grade silicone spray. I spray a disposable paint brush (the sponge kind) with silicone and "paint" the zippers and fasteners.

Re: bimini top

Thank you Capecanvas. Now I know exactly what to do. My boat is going in the water tomorrow but it is still a little chilly here in the mid atlantic region. I think I'll wait a few weeks to ensure proper drying. The web links were really helpful.
