Re: Bird Deterrent

I've been to power plants where they use recordings of predator birds to keep seagulls and other nuisance birds away. Have heard the same recordings in the downtown area of a few cities.

Shotguns is my answer too. Ha! Not really, pretty much everything is federally protected nowadays so shotguns will just get you fines and jail time.....wish it weren't so. The problem with deterrents is that the birds shy away from them at first, but once they realize that there is no physical harm, they ignore them.

I'm speaking from several years of experience because I have private water on my private property, with privately purchased and raised fish, and the federally protected birds are cleaning me out..course the tree huggers and politicians don't give a rats arse.

So if you come up with a legal answer, I would appreciate hearing about it.

Regards,

Mark

Bird deterrents are really useful.
I saw lots of bird deterrents at www.birddeterrents.org
that are specifically used on what kind of bird problem you have.
I like them because they don't hurt bird, they just scare them away.:)

At used car lots, they always have the banner thing with the triangle colors all the way around the light posts. Buy a string of them and make an X across your boat and elevate the central point. They will stay away for sure. The guy that did this at one of our local marinas was the only boat without droppings on it.

Re: Bird Deterrent

i thought doves were ground nesters.

Naw, they're seed eaters, so they feed on the ground mostly, but I have about 30 pair of em in my spruce trees, way up. They sort of scrap and fight every evening. Sounds like they're gonna knock off a wing.

We have vacationed on the Gulf coast beaches for many years and all the condos there string Monofilament over their pools to keep all birds away, and it works great.

Having watched bird patrols at airports for many years, I can tell you that not much of anything works. I've seen fake owls, recorded predator bird sounds, bird bombs (look like M80s shot out of a small pistol) and other harassment techniques. The gulls (and other birds) will leave briefly and then come right back.

I do like TD's idea though, because it prevents the gulls from having a place to land.

Re: Bird Deterrent

Lots of solutions that work but each situation is different. In my case I had problems with big birds, pelicans, egrets, herons, standing on my cars and in my covered boat lift. Since I had roofs to attach things to, I cut long ribbon strips of umbrella material and suspended them down from the roof, works. Also consider designing a frame assy. and attaching chicken wire fencing, also works. OSPREYS are a different story. They are dirty and noisy at night sitting in the trees. Few shots with a BB gun and they moved on.
My bedroom area is enclosed with a heavy, tinted plastic material called florida glass ( against code to install a real wall ). A mocking bird took up night residence in a tree next to the bedroom and every morning before day break he would start singing. Sounded like he was in bed with me. Took about a week, I made a point of getting up before he did and would go out a shake the tree to wake him up. He did not like that and decided to spend his nights somewhere else. regards FRED
