My boat is in my 20' x 20' carport which is under my 9' high deck which has a roof 9' above it. So the carport is a dry sheltered area to work in on a concrete slab. Perfectly safe area for the boat.

The deck is timber strips with gaps between them.

The nearest beach to me is at least 45 minutes away. There is no source of sand nearer to us except garden suppliers.

But the sand that caused the problem came from our beach shack which is nearly 2 hours away.

My darling daughter, who until about 15 minutes ago was the apple of my eye, brought her beach towel back from the beach shack. There was no reason to bring it back. It lives at the beach shack. It is used only at the beach shack. We have plenty of towels here. None of them have any sand in them.

But having brought it back for no reason, she shook it out on the deck. In the only position out of the 8,000 or so square feet on our block that could cause a problem.

Some of the sand went through the gaps in the deck.

Directly above my outboard.

The cowl was off the outboard while I was doing a few things to it.

Fine sand is spread all over the motor. No doubt some went down the double carby throats, given the amount sitting on the perforated throat covers.

So, as bloody usual, my carefully arranged day off tomorrow won't be spent on the intended tasks of working on the boat dash but first on fixing up something that wouldn't need it if my bloody family didn't do things which just defy all possible logic and common sense that create endless and unnecessary work for me.

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

My family does the same to me. I have learned to "idiot proof" everything I am doing.

If paint is involved and I have to go get another brush from the basement, that means seal the paint can, put it on the floor, close the door and lock it behind me.

When I am cooking dinner, I have to point out every piece of cookware and utensile I am using, or as soon as my back is turned, it will dissapear to the dishwasher.

When I want to shower, I have to tell my wife not to start the dishwasher, put on a load of laundry and fill the tub for the baby at the same time... if I want hot water.

Yes.. It is a conspiracy.

Your wife doesn't have a long-lost twin she's looking for, does she, born 1951 in Victoria, Australia?

I spend the day grinding my aged body away in the summer heat on whatever task; announce I'm going into the shower; last about 30 seconds after I've started the water before I get the on /off from the dishwasher or washing machine or both. Come out and complain and get told "Sorry, I didn't realise you were in the shower.". For Chrissake, where did you think I'd be when I said I was going to have a shower?

As for cooking, regardless of what time I start it's a silent signal that magically beams out across the world for (a) both kids to descend sequentially upon our small kitchen and hold the fridge door open obstructing me while they ponder the mysteries of refrigeration for ages, and (b)telemarketers to ring me and get upset when I tell them I'm not interested in whatever it is that they're selling and that, No!, I don't want to know what it is before I reject it, and (c) aged relatives to ring me and force me to pretend that I'm actually interested in the latest medication prescribed by their doctor for a sore bum.

If your lucky the carb has a butterfly that was closed. This should have helped keep some sand out of the motor. I would suggest you vaccuum out the top of the carb without opening up the butterfly. Be careful as the vaccum could create a spark and could catch fire! Make sure you have an extinquisher on hand and stand back from carb throat. Then if all goes well open the butterfly and vacuum out the rest that might have gotten past the butterflies.

Good luck! They dont call them rugrats or crumb crunchers for nothing. :D

Now that's a fly in the ointment!

It's a small consolation, but it couldn't have gotten past the reeds.

If i pour a glass of water, I get one sip and then when i go back to it, it has been placed in the dishwasher. I am trying to get the carpet laid in the Fiberform, and the wife, and family have to go grocerey shopping (with me) at 500pm when I have 30 minutes of daylight left, even though the store is open when it is dark out. This is of course in addition to the fact (REALGUN can vouch) that I live in the darn desert, but has been raining for the last 3 weeks since i started this project.

If you would have had the cowl on, I bet your daughter would have left that towel at the beach shack. It was only because the motor was opened that made her bring that towel home.

No biggy and under half an hour to fix, as follows.

1 minute: Take house vacuum cleaner to boat.

5 minutes: Look for thin nozzle which should be in vacuum cleaner tool holder. Decide it's under a foot or two of clothes and junk in my daughter's pigsty of a bedroom, which she won't be needing much longer as I'm going to put her up for adoption after this.

1 minute: Disconnect workshop vac from sawdust collector and take to boat. It has a thin nozzle on board because I take care of my tools.

2 minutes: Cover carby, vacuum loose sand off motor, wipe off motor, blow off motor with compressed air being careful to direct it away from starter motor and crank as I don't want it in seals or bearings. Blow off dizzy belt and starter cog housing.

5 minutes: Remove and clean carby with cotton buds. No sand below butterflies. Hooray!

5 minutes: Remove with tweezers a bit of cotton wool stuck on a screw on butterfly shaft.

1 minute: Blow out carby with compressed air. Confirm venturis working fine by blowing fuel over splashwell.

1 minute: Clean fuel off splashwell.

5 minutes: Refit carby, PUT COWL ON SO IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN, put tools away.

jamminmaz, I know where Louisana is. LOL I don't drink beer. :) I live at 98th and Central I will not vouch for your rain! Cuase we don't get as much. LOL You guys near the mountain get about 17 inches a year and we, on our side away from the mountain, get 8 if we are lucky.

I have exactly the opposite problem. Everybody in my house is allergic to the dishwasher, especially if it is full of clean dishes.

Lucky you.

My family has dishwasher door phobia, which prevents them opening the door and putting dirty dishes etc in it.

DJ, me too !!

Know how I keep the kitchen empty when I am trying to cook? Don't unload the dishwasher. There isn't a child or girlfriend within a nautical mile. Sometimes its a fair trade.

:)

Hah, I have the solution,;)
Sell the wife:eek:, hire the kids out to clean and polish, buy another boat in need of TLC, and have peace and quiet. The only thing is, its lonely:(, the boat doesn't talk and the quiet gets to you so you hear things you don't want to hear:confused:. Oh well, go for another cruise.PH.:D

Wife starts washing clothes, then has to go take care of one, or both, of her in their mid- 30's sons.
She also left supper cooking. No matter how I finish the cooking, and did the wash.......it was wrong.
