Does anyone sell a black lower unit lube? I just bought a used Johnson 40 hp that's ten years old but barely has any hours on it and was just professionally serviced about a year ago and then winterized. I know they changed they L U lube, but it's a deep black. Is this because of some problem or was the lube origionally black?

It would not be uncommon for the fluid to be black after a period of time. Refill it and check it again after a few outings...Don't know of any new fluid that is black...If it was never run after the fluid change, then being deep black is a bit odd..

When I first got my 83 150 and changed the lower unit oil it was very black and stunk. Didn't smell like oil at all. I don't think it had ever been changed. It gets changed at least once a year now and no problems.

It smells like LU oil and has about the same consistency. It's solid black, like it looks like it's supposed to be that way.

Merc (Quicksilver) lower unit fluid is black.....almost. OMC fluid is (used to be) honey colored.

.Just changed mine in a new-to-me 1989 30HP Johnson. What came out was deep olive green, and only about 3oz. The new Walmart brand Hi Vis OMC stuff is light golden transparent. Honey colored is a perfect description.

No this stuff was night black and looked like it was supposed to be that way. The owner's manual just recomended regular OMC lower unit oil and I changed it today with the Wal-Mart stuff. Started her for the first time today too. Couldn't have asked her to run any better. It's so nice to have a two stroke that can sit there and idle all day long and not get foulded up. (I'm used to really old OMC's)

Cute Ken d:)

My last OMC was a '72 125 hp and I used OEM fluid in a white soft plastic pint container....don't remember what they called it. But it was honey colored.

I moved to Mercs and theirs was very dark...hence blackish....and today there are 3 or 4 Merc fluids for different applications.

We both know they buy their gear lube from a refinery or jobber and have their own specs that it has to meet. Don't know what color wallyworld fluid is, nor who makes it. But

If it were mine, I wouldn't hesitate to change it. It's cheap and easy to do. Whenever I get something new to me, I go over it and change any lubricants regardless of what people say about its condition or how good it appears. Too much at risk for the amount of $$ and time it takes to change it out. My 2c.
