Black Max 175

Anybody know a place on the block that will verify what engine I have. The serial number comes back to an 84 200 h.p but the engine covers say 175. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I need to install a waterpump and want to make sure I have the correct part.

Covers are swapped often. Serial numbers are a lot harder to swap.<br /><br />I would go with an '84 200HP.

Thanks JB. This is kinda frustrating to me, the previous owner told me he had never had any problems with the boat. Swapping the motor sounds like a pretty serious problem to me. I think the boat is only rated for a 175 Max though. Better not tell my insurance agent

I would bet all the parts interchangable. If you use your Sr# and go to Mercury Express parts and it will tell what to use and you can even order the Mercury heavy duty impeller, much better than after market ones.<br /> http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/...iceParts/sphome.asp?CID=168165191071228061271

I read a post somewhere in here where you can check the quarter size (I guess freeze plug?) on top of the engine. That serial number is different that the one on the swivel. Looks Like I have a mutt of a motor. The swivel comes back as model # 1200724 and the number on the quarter thingie comes to model # 1200622. Does any one have an idea if what these numbers stand for?

Also, Serial # on Swive is 6523566, <br /><br />Serial # on freeze plug thing is 6157902

Sound like my situation. the previuos owner had swaped the single ram trim midsection to a newer style 3 ram trim with no S/N in place. For my engine parts I use the powerhead ID number. <br />If your midsection has the original S/N I would use that for parts.<br /><br />Just my .02

Thanks for all your help guys, got the lower unit out, and one of the impellar flaps was folded the opposite way. I assume this could by my overheating problem. Is there a way I can flush the lower unit with water to remove any debris? I have a Bob's machine low water pickup and the previous owner told me not to run on muffs. How much gear lube should the LU hold?

Using a garden hose should do the trick, there shouldn't be a lot of debri in there though. It's pretty easy to see if there is, once you have the pump apart.<br /><br />Replace the gaskets also, and torque down all the nuts, screws to the proper spec.<br />You should have no problem running on muffs if everything is working properly, just don't rev the engine above 1500rpms.<br /><br />To fill the lower unit, drain the old oil first of course. With both the bottom drain plug and the top vent screw removed. Fill it from the bottom until the oil just starts to exit the top screw. You probably won't use more than a half a quart (you will use the squeeze type quart containers with the tapered cap to do this)... When it's just exiting the top screw reinsert the bottom plug and you're done. (do not overfill) Do this with the lower unit level of course.

Thanks for all the help guys, going to the local dealer today to buy new impeller and gaskets. The little plastic extender tube looked a little rough when I took it out so I'm thinking about replacing that too. Is decarbing something I should do on muffs? or can I do it once I am at the lake? I am definatly a do it yourself kinda guy, my buddy that has been fishing for years takes all his problems to a mechanic. Being a school teacher, $$$ is always the issue. Are there any other maintenance things I should do to keep this motor in top shape?

Just ordered muffs from Bob's Machine, designed for the low water pickup I have, Ouch $30, I guess Better safe than sorry
