Using a garden hose should do the trick, there shouldn't be a lot of debri in there though. It's pretty easy to see if there is, once you have the pump apart.<br /><br />Replace the gaskets also, and torque down all the nuts, screws to the proper spec.<br />You should have no problem running on muffs if everything is working properly, just don't rev the engine above 1500rpms.<br /><br />To fill the lower unit, drain the old oil first of course. With both the bottom drain plug and the top vent screw removed. Fill it from the bottom until the oil just starts to exit the top screw. You probably won't use more than a half a quart (you will use the squeeze type quart containers with the tapered cap to do this)... When it's just exiting the top screw reinsert the bottom plug and you're done. (do not overfill) Do this with the lower unit level of course.
