Hi,

I've got a Bayliner Capri with a Black Max V6 150 on the back

The engine runs quite happily but it uses a hell of a lot of fuel and very little oil. It smokes a lot (you can almost taste petrol in the smoke) and leaves petrol on the top of the water. I presume it is running too rich?

Also when the boat is driving along on the plane, there is a large rooster tail out the back and the bathing platform is dragging in the water causing a lot of spray, would this mean the engine needs raising or lowering? the Cav Plate currently sits about 1/2 inch above the 'keel'

Also, Serial number seems to be 08197550

Anyone have any idea how old it is?

Thanks
Sam

If it is not mixing oil at the proper ratio then it could melt down at any time while running.

Buy a factory manual. Rebuild carbs and check oil pump per manual instructions.

mechanic is going to have a look over the weekend, but i'm going to take off the carbs and give them a good clean.

I have also been told to smooth the inside of the carbs with wet and dry paper because when they are moulded, the surfaces are left rough inside
does that sound like a common thing?

No. You are going about it wrong. Cleaning only would probably not fix your problem. You need carb kits with floats and needle valves and gaskets. That sanding thing does not sound right to me. Don't go cheap. The book is an investment.

I didnt think cleaning would solve the problem, but was told by my mechanic it would aid fuel economy

Not it wont, but proper set-up,propping and making sure back draft jets will help. Also check the recirculation (bleed) valve to see if stopped up as this can cause excessive smoke as will pinhole in fuel pump diaphram.
