My motor has always cranked up on the first try and ran like a dream with no problems. About a month ago it started struggling to fire or turn over. It just turns and turns and turns but won't fire. Sometimes when it does fire it idles really rough and will usually cut off after 30 seconds or so. Now, sometimes i will take it out to the river, fire right up and then when i try to crank it a second time it will just turn and turn. I replaced the fuel filter and spark plugs. The odd thing is that sometimes i will put the muffs on at the house and it will fire right up but when i put it in the water it will just turn and turn until the battery runs dead but will never fire. It makes no sense. I cant figure out if its a fuel or a spark problem. Its got to be something small that i'm missing. Any help would be appreciated.

Trim it all the way down. Squirt a little pre-mix in the carbs. If it trys ta run, replace the fuel line and ball between the tank and fuel pump, rebuild the fuel pump. If it doesn't check for fire at the plugs........

If you don't have a service manual, get one.

2 items come to mind on this problem.

First, check out your electric choke or enricher system. Without that, it'll start hard of course.

The other thing that sneaks up on you is the starter slowly shorts out, drawing excessive current and running just a little slow at cranking. What happens is that the conductive debris from brush wear piles up in the end of the starter, and eventually shorts out the commutator, which is on the end of the armature. It's sneaky, and fooled me into buying an unneeded new battery with the symptoms. You can get a current tester, which works by deflecting a needle with the field around a wire carrying current. Starter should draw around 125 amps. Mine was doing 350.

After that, it gets down to giving the thing a thorough physical exam to get to the trouble.

hope it helps
