BLACK OIL dripping from prop!

I can only assume this is gear lube! could i have a busted seal or something? it is a slow leak and it seems to be comming from in between the prop and the case. Also i think i have a bent prop shaft? I turn the prop by hand and it wobbles slightly. Is a shaft hard or expensive to replace? could the hub not be seated firmly into the prop or off angle? The motor is running real strong, but today is the first day i noticed the black oil and i clean up the motor every time i go.

so you think it may be the propeller shaft seals? whats common? would the propeller shaft just slide outta there? or do you have to take off the shaft bearing housing and the stuff up to the reverse gear? easyo or hardo?

Make sure your not looking at unburned oil. Two strokes do this. Smell it. Does it smell like gear oil? Remove vent plug and see if the oil level is full in the lower unit. My bet is its just unburned oil, But check it.

Remove the prop and see if the shaft wobbles. Cant see if from hear..You might just have a bent prop blade????

wheres the vent plug? heh does it have a dipstick in there? never changed gear oil on motor, it really does smell funk, not like quicksilver, its pretty thick too. do shafts just slide in an out or you gotta break it all down?

If it is that strong..Its got to be gear oil. Vent is on the top on the lower unit. You will need some special tools to do the lower prop shaft. If you have never done it..Take it to the shop.

What kind of motor is it???? Also Isoate the problem... take the prop off... put something like a square next to the shaft and rotate it to see if it's bent...Drain the oil and see if it has water in it... Don't take it apart if you don't have to.... You can take the shaft to a machine shop and have it straightened.. "you will dye when they tell you how much a new one is"...
Or you could just take it over to Circle D Boats... 409-722-5230... Tell'm Howie sent ya...
If you don't know were the vent plug is... you probably don't want to tackel taking it apart yourself... It can be done without the factory tools...If it's a Merc you have to use a chisal to hammer out the nut that holds the bearing carrier and then do the same for the cap that holds the shift rod... it's a tuchy job without the right tools.. but I have done it... If it's an OMC you are going to have to find the biggest pair of snap ring pliers you have ever seen... about a foot and a half long..... good luck...

hahahah yeah i see the snap ring pliers in the manual being used, i read all about how it comes apart, whew it looks like a AOD transmission! heh almost. found the plugs, there was about a cup of oil in there. yeah the shaft is bent. cant tell where and yep its gear oil leaking. it seems the previous owner never changed the oil i bet. so i suppose the thing is about wasted. its a 60 hp jhonson tracker pro. wonder if i can rent that puller from a shop? so a straightend shaft is as good as new huh?

If the surface the seal rides on hasn't been worn too bad... Straightened one will be good as new...
They aren't very complicated to work on... prety simple and straight forward actually... only critical thing is pinion lash... Keep track of the shims... put them back where they came from and lash will be fine...
I am fortrunate in that I only work on Race stuff... Don't have to deal with motors that have been negelected... That bearing carier is probably grown in there pretty good buy now... They can be a real ***** to pull.... Just be carefull when you go to banging and beating on it... don't want to tear up anything else getting it apart... The point is that working on a nicely maintained freshwater boat is a cake walk.. you can pretty well work with the manual and things go pretty well... When you start dealing with parts that have been exposed to saltwater and caroded together... you start needing pullers and torches.. and sledge hammers and pry-bars.. and plastic explosive... A shop has all this stuff and knows how hard they can pull and beat without destorying things... Mothing worse then showing up at the shop with something you've got half taken appart,or something you destroyed that could have been fixed...
If you want to try it.. go for it... if you get stuck..Give us a call and we'll see what we can do to help....

well i shot a can of liquid wrench in it to start with. that aught to get things started for whomever. wonder if i could just fill it with gear oil and see if it stops leaking with alot thicker junk in there. maybe i can get some more time out gettin them trout... i hear ya on that plastic explosive, im about to take the boat out with my dewalt and a holesaw. its probly had this slightly bent shaft for years. few more months wont hurt anything? maybe? if it keeps leaking though that will let me know whats up.

anyone think that gear oil that is worn completely out would be thin enough to bypass the seals? :) as in maybe if i try fresh oil it might not leak?

I'm very suprised didn't have water in it... put some more oil in it... Get you some penzoil gear lube at Walmart for about 6 bucks... Then buy a lottry ticket.. if your are lucky enough that the case doesn't leak... you'll probably win... then you can buy a nice pretty new boat or two and not have to worry about it...

Greg. If ya gotta manual it should tell what kind of gear lube. Probably someone hit a stump and busted a prop when they bent the shaft. I doubt you can keep oil in it...I've been adding lube to my 20 hp Johnson since March to avoid doing a seal job on the lower unit but I get this cute milky snot-green oil every time I pull it out of the water.

Penziol 90w gear lube... Stop buy a boat discount place and pick up a little pumpy-doo... That's going to be the most expensive part... Pump the lube in the bottom till it comes out the vent... screw in the vent...pull the pump and pop the bottom screw in.. should take less then a quart..
No need to buy high dollar lube... Penzoil will work fine... I use it in the race boats.. corse I change it every week....
