Black or 70's green?

While I sit around and wait for the rest of my 6hp seals, I decided to start working on my 1969 20hp. (sand blast and paint)

I was thinking the original forest green, or the merc black.

I have 2 cans of the merc black, and its pretty strong stuff, and a good shade.

The (what I call...) 1970's green has the old rustic look to it, and I want a nice, new looking outboard.

I wont be blasting the powerhead (fear of getting sand inside) thus, I wont be painting it.

Should I stick with the original color, or go to something new, and more hip?

Staying with the original color will help the resale value. Besides, if you paint a Johnson to look like a Merc, you'll kill it.:D:D

Nice, new looking outboard, crappy old looking powerhead.

How comes blasting the powerhead is nessecary for paiting. I clean them with laquer thinner, and sand og loosen whatever is loose, a little, and prime and paint them. I have painted a dozen. No problemos !! Ha Ha the 1985 and on powerheads are semigloss black from nature.

I've repainted a few but tend to agree with TD, to some degree. I'll repaint them if they are just ratty looking, but I hate motors that someone has repainted and not refurbished mechanically. What's the point?

As for sandblasting, I don't bother. I would much rather use paint remover and not have a motor with a pitted surface.

Oh I use glass, walnut shells, whatever I have left over from work.

It makes the metal look brand new. I guess I don't really need to do it to everything.... But I like getting the years of old paint off.
