I was told there is a problem with the black powder( soot) on the exhaust of my 1994 200 2 cycle?
What would this indicate?

hhmmm, let's see. I believe it would be exhaust.
Go stick you finger in the tailpipe of your car or truck, I bet you will find black powder.
no, seriously, I would check with a certified boat mechanic to be sure there isn't a problem. someone on this forum may have an answer for you instead of a wise answer...like mine!!

My first reaction when this mechanic said this was "well, it is a tailpipe"!
It is a powder you can wipe off onto your finger???
What is he getting at.
Mentioned something about timing???
Should I run and pick up the boat and burn rubber out of the parking lot???

If it were my engine we were talking about, unless this guy is an omc certified mechanic, I never would have taken it there in the first place.

Firstly i would ask him to explain a little more and the reasons for his diagnosis. He may be thinking that it is running over rich or he may be wanting some more of your hard earned cash before you leave his premises !! It is an exhaust and it does dispose of the waste products of combustion so it will certainly be dirty in there just like a chimney !!!
Why was it taken to a mechanic in the first place ?? is it running O.K. or is it there for diagnosis and repairs ?? if the latter then the timing may be his next move to improving your outboard's performance.

Yeah, it is smoking pretty bad at start up and then after warm up still smokes pretty bad at restart.
Going to pull it and head for a certified OMC shop. This guy was near the barn.

Re: black powder on inside of exhaust

Lemme tell all you guys out there a little secret. Well maybe not so secret to some people.

I was an outboard mechanic for 24 years, and an honest one, never ripped anybody off. But if I had wanted to.....

I noticed that when you tell a man what is wrong with his motor and what it needs, he'll say "yeah, sure, go ahead with it". But if he has his wife bring the boat in and you tell her what it needs, she'll ask questions. "Why does it need that part?" "Can't you use the old one?" "Why did it break anyway?" And on and on.

Bottom line: Our male pride and ego won't let us ask questions because it exposes our ignorance. So we'll fall for anything. Don't be a sap--ask questions. AND weigh the answers!

I have now taken the boat to an OMC cert. shop. It is a really clean, well organized place too. Nice people.

No 100 mile an hour disertation on... it is this, could be that, what is this, blah, blah, blah.

I feel 100% better about the whole thing so far.
