Winterizing my inlaws 04 Malibu LXI yesterday and we were replacing the plug wires, cap/rotor. Snapped the end off the coil end of the coil wire but got the stub out. Unfortunately the new set came with 2 coil wires and neither style works with the coil on this motor. Motor is a 2004 Mercury Black Scorpion 5.7L with the Thunderbolt V ignition. Any thoughts on where to get just a coil wire for this setup? Found a picture of the coil setup online which is attached. The coil end connector looks like the distributor side of a Delco HVS wire - think sparkplug with the bulb screwed off of it. LXI Ignition.jpg

Most Malibu's use Indmar instead of Merc motors and it looks like one of those. I would suggest trying your local auto store or look for the universal cut-to-fit wires. If you get a cut to fit I'm thinking the coil ceter would be the same it would only be the boot which may be different. If this is the case you could use the old boot on the new wire.

Looks like one of what? Malibu's from that era are about equally as likely to have Indmar or Mercury motors. I've got no doubt it is a Black Scorpion, aside from the huge lettering on the top cover they are set up completely different than the Indmars of the same time frame.

Problem I'm having with the cut to fit options is that none of them come with the correct style terminal for this coil. I saved the terminal from the old wire, so worse case I may just use that on one of the new coil wires that came with the kit. Would prefer a manufactured piece since it is not my boat and I'd rather just snap it on and forget about it.

All the 6.2(377) I find have the HVS distributor, maybe someone change the distributor. Since the issue is the coil end of the wire maybe find the wire for the coil end and make sure its long enough to cut. The Mallory end is easy to find. Just found these

6.2?? This is a 2004 Mercury Black Scorpion 5.7L like it says in the first post. Very common engine in that time frame.

Agree, got my self combining two issues, that said still cannot find a 5.7 or 6.2 that comes with the TBV and that coil. Where did you find the pic?

Old jeep are you looking for an end like they use on dirt bikes or snow machines where the top of the spark plug is unscrewed and the "boot" is a hard plastic piece?

I took the range of serial numbers and looked them up at Mercury marine website. Mercury site list serial number 0M317000 thru 0W689999, which I started with 0M3317000, 391600 and a few more going higher. All serial numbers are showing the HVS distributer. I'm still thinking someone had trouble with the HVS and changed over to TBV. There has been a lot of folks having trouble with the HVS.

I still think you can fix it with getting the coil end and then attaching the Mallory end. Will see if Fun Times has any further insight to the issue

The serial is OM395990, my father inlaw found some paper work that had it listed

The distributor is original to the boat/engine as far as we know since he has owned it since it had about 100 hours on it - now has 1100 hours. Not to mention the drawing that I linked to clearly shows the TB V style cap

Nope, it is a press on like what you see on a modern Indmar Delco HVS type distributor cap. About 1/2 the diameter of a spark plug top.
Here is a picture of the connector end - lower one, next to a standard plug wire end and a 8mm plug wire

Well I be dang, it now shows up as serial number range as you listed, go figure. List the plug wire set part number as 863656A03. Don't see just the coil wire, so if you bought the same Merc part number set, were back at the beginning.

Good thing is I learned something today, now just have to remember for next time

Unfortunately I didn't buy the quicksilver product 863656A03, I bought a set of "better" wires that were supposedly for the black scorpion 5.7 and likely fits a lot of them just not the one with this particular coil. So I guess I'll just be making one from the parts I have here.

That coil is the same as used on all the MPI engines (V6 and V8), and is a 'standard' GM part fitted to most GMC and Isuzu trucks.. Take the broken lead to any half desent auto shop and they should be able to match it, or make one up on the spot.
Tell them the coil is a GM 10489421. (And if you want a spare coil, that's what you buy. :D)

Thanks, that helps a ton. Using that coil number to find the Delco coil number I am able to see a complete list of vehicles that used it and can look for a coil wire that way. Found a couple that are pretty long so far, hoping to track one down that is a little shorter.

Just in case this question ever comes up again. Every automotive application for that coil also uses an HVS distributor cap, so none would actually work. Found the terminal end I need for the Coil so I'm just going to take one of the new coil wires that came with my plug wire kit and put a new end on it.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That will work. ^^^

I was going to suggest that you buy one of the longer leads that fits that coil (with the wrong 'cap' end), trim it the right length and put a standard spark plug end on it (which fits the TB-V dissy cap)....

Cheers,

Chris........
