black sticky material behind gelcoat

Hey there, new member here. I would have used the search tool, but I have no idea what to even enter as a seach word.... so thats why im firing the question out here.

First off, I just bought myself a 1993 Mariah 180 Diablo, 3.0L in September last year. It is in relatively decent shape except for some exterior comestic boo boos (deep gouge on port side down to firebreglass, some decals towards stern are scratched, mariah emblems missing on both sides etc).

But towards the bow and port / starboard sides around the water line area, there are these black "sticky" areas where it looks like its an undercoat from where the gelcoat "used" to be. Possibly it was pieces of gelcoat that cracked off when the boat was cleaned up?.

I do have pictures of the boat, but you cant really see the black sticky parts up close. There is quite a few of them and overall size of them is around the size of your thumb.

So basically what I want to know is, would anyone know exactly what that black sticky material is and if I should get it sealed (expoxyed, patched etc) before I put it into the water in May-June...?

thanks to anyone that replies!

Was it maybe adhesive for a rub rail or something?

Re: black sticky material behind gelcoat

well from what I last remember of touching it in Sept (its in winter storage right now), it doesn't appear to be a goo stuck on the surface, it appears more like the gelcoat has been flaked off?

Similar to if paint on your vehicle had chipped off.

Ive just been thinking about what i might need for May for cleaning it up and getting it ready and I know that was one of the things.

I have no idea what that would be. The only thing that should be under the gelcoat is fiberglass.
Maybe the previous owner applied something there to keep water out of the fiberglass?

Chip a small piece of gel coat off at the edge of one of the existing chips to see if the sticky substance is there.

Hmmm that will have to wait till May .. hehe.

I know the gouge on the port side doesnt show that black sticky stuff I touched, so it didnt really seem like a layer and then the white outer.. kinda thing. But then again, where the gouge sits, its above the rub rail.

Thats my link to my webshots page, just uploaded them now. Look below the 2nd stripe towards the lower sections of the hull and you will see those lil black things i was talking about (hard to see I know).

Maybe I will just have to wait till spring time to figure it out. All i know is that if its open gelcoat I will have to patch it before the gelcoat peels back.

Here is how to post the pic on iboats:

Pic #0001, 0002, 0025, 0026 all show the black little spots. #25 and #26 are the hardest to see it. The spots are all below the 2nd green stripe towards the bottom of the hull. Pic #0001 its below the numbers and towards the bow as well as where the green stripe is faded towards stern. If I had easier access to the boat, I could have taken another better pic or at least touched it again..lol.

Well, as long as the layers in the construction of the lower hull is the same as the gouge shown in picture #12, then it would just be some sticky material that has adhered to the outside of the hull. Because I dont see any black adhesive "under sheet" in the gouge pic (#12), its pure white down to fibreglass.

Otherwise, I was under the impression that the gelcoat coating on the outside had flaked off and the black adhesive layer was showing.

Thanks for the link on how to post pics on here. I just now found out there was a thumbnail to 600 pixel resize button on Webshots forum post links...lol. I never noticed it before, so I would always post thumbnails because I thought thats all that webshots could do.

Too bad you cant upload from your computer on here or I could have circled the area where I was referring to.

Re: black sticky material behind gelcoat

wow kind of forgot I had an account on this webpage .. woopsie.

Anyways, just wanted to update my old post about the so called "sticky black material" that I could see in the photos of my boat. I had a chance to clean it up over the weekend and all it is, is the bottom part of the white pin striping that goes along the boat. The top white part has been probably pressure washed off, and the lower adhesive to gelcoat remained on the boat.. lol. So there is no damage to the hull, just some decals removed :)
