This is a house boat application.....so the setup could be anything.... i have no idea where the breather is.

Head is just a pedal/drop thingy

Thanks.......My wish is to come up smelling like roses with this

Cheers

Are talking about the filter that goes in the tank vent hose?

Re: Black water air filter.

yes....but i dont seem to be able to find the vent ! or the hose for that matter.....lol

this is just a house boat that could of possibly been built by a small company that only built for their fleet.

so i was hoping for a diagramm on how to install a vent or other simmelar schematics on how the vent system works. i might have to plumb one in.

thanks bud

Re: Black water air filter.

FWIW I've only seen two designs... one was a flexible hose to a vent fitting the same as a fuel vent on the side of the hull and the other was a pvc stack on the roof.... probably need to go below and find the tank to trace the vent

Re: Black water air filter.

the tank is inside one of the toons.....its a little aft,,,,but not quite all the way back.....the ship is on the water.....so access is very limited. i have a feeling i might have to wait till spring to get on an air mattress and go between the toons. i would imagine IF there is a vent.....it would be tween the toons below deck

I have design #1.

No filter, and no smell unless its immediately after flushing. When someone is flushing, you REALLY don't want to be aft.

Re: Black water air filter.

yeah...there is no stack.....

every once in a while.....when alone on the boat.....i get a whiff...... this is mostly aft,

we are taking it to the pump out and going to winterize the water system today.....so i will investigate more on the tank.....but i think the vent is between the toons.

When you find the vent you will need to fit a charcoal filter into the vent tube between tank and hull fitting. Vetus do a suitable unit as probably many US companies will.

Re: Black water air filter.

First off, there has to be a vent on the tank or otherwise it would collapse in on itself whenever someone tried to pump it out. Look immediately around the area of the tank on the outside of the pontoon or the side of the house unit. It won't be more than a 5/8" white plastic or SS opening...looks like a bilge pump discharge port. If you have to, get near the tank and look for a 3/4" plastic pipe coming from the tank and running upward. It will be a reinforced tube so it maintains it's shape during pumpout.

I had the same problem on my boat. Right after a flush, you would get a slight sewage odor. Even though it only lastyed a second or two, it was still unpleasant. I checked online and the filters are around $90. I made mine for $15.

If you're interested, I used 2" PVC and glued on endcaps with threaded inserts. drill a hole in each end and insert a barbed fitting appropriate for your size vent hose. Inside, use a piece of womens stocking hose and fill with activated charcoal pellets (available in any pet store). Insert inline in the vent hose. Works like a champ.
There will be enough charcoal in the tub you buy to last you for years. They recommend changing the filter yearly, but I just replace my filter sock about once a year. For free.

Here's a quick diagram I made if you're interested.

Fireman, thanks for the design idea. I will use it. I have bought a number of filters (SeaLand) in the past and it always makes me mad at how much they charrge for something so simple. Especially since if you let the tank get too full and stuff sloshes into the filter, it is ruined.

The vent hose will always run upward to the vent opening. Install the filter in the upward run of the hose and it won't get ruined if the tank gets too full. BTW, try not to let the tank get too full. It can easily clog the vent line and then when it gets pumped out, you'll destroy the tank.

Re: Black water air filter.

thanks guys.....we went to the pump out yesterday......and as fireman said......i checked for a vent.....but im sure it is under the boat between the toons....so iim going to have to wait till spring and ill get a air mattress......i checked all around where it should be......lol.....but no vents visible...

as we were pumping.....i had the head valve /flush. shut.....and noticed that there was no extra stress on the pumper....so there must be a vent somewhere.

on a side note......
the owner had been on the boat a few times while i was working on it...and the boat was always in construction phase (i was brought on to the project when the boat failed a hull inspection, and asked to repair the boat....the whole boat)
the owner kept whining that it was taking so long to fix the boat and he was going broke with the cost of materials. (he bought some bad deck paint that flaked....so i had to grind off the paint from the whole boat, and re paint with stuff i suggested)

the owner got to see the finished product yesterday......he totally loved it.....and the inspector commented on everything i did to the boat....picking out several areas of repair, and commenting on what a great job was done on it.....(the inspector did not know i had done the work and was standing right beside him when he was commenting) the inspector, increased the value of the boat by 12,000 over the first assessment due to the quality of repairs that were done to the boat.....and that a lot of work had been done.
then the inspector asked what company did the repairs so that he could recommend them to his other clients.....lol.....the owner pointed to me and said "he did them"

the boat was purchased in order to sell/flip......all along, i have been trying to talk the owner into renting the boat to summer tourists. i think he is leaning toward that now, as the boat is immaculate. and the owner commented several times that he really liked the boat, and that it looked really good. (keep in mind......this guy praises no one....he pays money and expects a good job....when he gets what he pays for....there is no hi fives, no thanks...no well done....) so for this guy to comment several times, was a real shock!

Re: Black water air filter.

I had the same brief odor issue on the Wellcraft- I just used RV toilet chemicals and pumped it out often. No worries!
