175HP blackmax sneezing and stalling at idle. Temp gage is reading much lower than it has in the past. Its acting just like it dose on fisrt cold start in the morning. Never really warming up.
Stuck thermostats comes to my mind. Anything else that would cause this condition?

I think she has a cold.
If it was stuck it would over heat
More like needs replacing. How many hours on it yearly?

Sounds to me like you've got a couple of stucky's. A stuck float and a stuck poppet valve. How long was it sitting and were you running ethanol gas in it?

The only adjustment on the carbs are the floats.
That what I needed as its a 2.0 175, the 2.4 175 had WMH carbs with the thermal valve. Check for a partially open t-stat on the head where the temp sender is mounted

Im guessing you have stuck Tstats in the open position.Mine would run cold at speed and start to get hot at low speed.I guess no pressure to fill upper heads/jackets.Coughing and sneezing could also be a reed valve problem.
Picture of my very sad looking tstats in the stuck open position below.

Re: blackmax running too cold?

put in new stats. Have not had a chance to get out on the water yet so we will see. They had some weeds stuck in em but not really too bad.

Is there any good documentation on poppet valves for these mercs? I do not really understand how it works.
Have searched the site here with not so good results.
