Re: Blame the GPS

A couple of weeks back A man and his wife ran up on a island on our local lake at WOT ! IT happened At 1 AM . Accident happened while they were consulting the GPS, The wife said thier is an Island out here, the man said the gps dont show it. The problem is our lake is 13 ft. low, Lots of Islands now that dont show on GPS.
He got hauled to Jail where he got to spend the night for Boating while Intoxicated. I was told that later they had a chopper lift the boat off the island, but I havent seen this reported in the papers.

Even the Lewis and Clark Expedition had to ask the natives for directions.:p:p

Re: Blame the GPS

Please mods let this one go:

Lewis and Clark were lost and met an Indian tribe that was also lost.Somehow the translation was misinterpreted and Lewis and Clark thought the Indian tribe's name was "We'retheheckarewees

I hit the alert button on myself so we'll see what the mods think of my reply.

You said it all T2F! ;) Notice the GPS didn't show the boulders, or sand pits  Nothin like good old maps, or an Atlas. Thanks all for my morning chuckle :D

Re: Blame the GPS

Hey, I just read "Undaunted Courage"....the Lewis and Clark story!! I can tell you all about it.....and yes, they alway asked the locals.

Had a similar event down here...Aussie couple honey-mooning in NZ used the GPS in the rental car, and dissapeared into 'no-where' for 3 days. Farmer found them stuck in his paddock.

Had an out-of-town couple come out to see a boat.....gave him a simple sentence direction....oh no...."we have a GPS".....great.....4 phone calls and 3hrs late he turns up...him and his misses were about to tear each others heads off.....and they blamed me for living in such a remote spot....which is 10 mins off the motorway. They didn't buy the boat....they couldn't cool down long enough to be rational.

Learn to do it the old way....read a map.....not like my Anita...she can't face the map in the right direction....."but I can't read the names"..and when things get out of hand..."it makes me feel sick when I try and read it"....need a cut lunch and a compass when she is navigating.

Cheers
Phillip

Re: Blame the GPS

Hey, I'm married to Mrs. News, Weather, and Geography! All I gotta do is ask her anything, at anytime, She really is "Miss Know it All" But I Love it! :D Better then a walking encyclopedia, or as a co-pilot on the road with her map & atlas, she never gets sick either, a real keeper! Way better then any GPS! with great side benefits, if you know what I mean ;)

Re: Blame the GPS

I've had my Garmin tell me to make a left turn when there was nothing but woods there. I didn't do it.
It also has taken me to the wrong address more then once. It' usually with in a couple miles of the "final destination" but one time it was way off. I figured it out as I got closer and I knew this woman lived in a farm house. It was taking me to a 20 story high rise in the middle of Baltimore City. It still had the right address in it and all. Now I read all the directions before I follow it.

Did you know that road signs and compasses still work? Yeah, it's amazaing.

Oh, and if you don't want to use a compass, old-fashioned paper road maps still work, too.

Re: Blame the GPS

on my vaca to sadona az. i used the the good old fasioned map (3 of them)one listing back forestry trials .we rented a 4x4 yukon and put 2400miles on in 2weeks, half being off road places jeep tours take you for bucu bucks .not once did we get lost for we always stayed alert.no electronics to rely on keeps you sharp.and yes , i continuously asked locals about area conditions and things to watch out for.
----this year we did st. george, zion, and bryce areas in utah. i had a garmin etrex (shows route for backtracking) always knew my way back ,but didnt have some computer telling me to go forward over a cliff.
----bottom line ---invest in a few GOOD maps and ask lots of questions .youll see more !
----oh ,etrex works great on the water also, usually acurate within 5ft for return trip, but i still look over my bow!;)
