With the boat stored in the garage for the winter, this would be a good time for me to familiarize myself with the Mercury repair manuel and parts list. The 115hp 2001 outboard is running perfect, so I don't want to stick my fingers into something I don't fully understand, but I know that someday I will need to talk the language. Here's my question.
When the manuel is talking about the "BLEED SYSTEM", we are talking about the fuel enrichner system, or as I would understand, the choke system. Just trying to follow all those little hoses without sticking my finger in to far. Don't want to pop a wire loose, or worse yet, smoke my finger.

Re: Bleed System

The bleed system is different than the choke or enrichener. The bleed system is the fuel recirculation system. It takes fuel from the crankcase thru a small tube and sends it to other parts of the crankcase.

Re: Bleed System

the bleed system used to be known as a puddle drain. it simply takes puddled fuel from the crankcase/reed box area and routes it to another cylinder to aid in low speed operation. if a bleed check valve fails it will tend to run rich and foul plugs at low speeds..
dont have much problems on the inline merc engines. biggest worry is the vynil oil lines.

Re: Bleed System

Thanks Chris & Rod, just when I thought I had it figured out, I find out I didn't. I will do more reading, and start looking at it from another view. I can see I was heading down the wrong road.
