I keep seeing the topic to bleed the air out of the upper vent plug on an alpha one when refilling. My alpha one only seems to have the oil pipe that is connected to the oil rservoir. I assume then that you remove this to vent the sysytem as I cannot see any other upper plug.

Lets put it this way. There are 2 ways to fill an Alpha drive.
1. the right way
2. the wrong way
If you use the second method, it will cost you an outdrive.
If you use the first, all will be well if you use new gaskets and fill per the manual.

Which method are you using?

Re: Bleeding lower gear casing oil.

Reading your other post your not gonna line that stuff up with the uppper on the boat :)

A pro who does it everyday may but its to hard for a rookie

And the upper needs to be removed to check the rest of the drive for problems anyway

Put the lower on a HOMEMADE stand

Then you be able to line things up and be sure things like the quad ring on the penny are in the correct place

And if you have a 1991 or newer GEN II this is the manual on what you doing

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/14/14b3.pdf

tommays

Usually,if you loosen the top of the res.,remove the drain plug, empty the drive, attach the pump to the drain hole, pump in one qt.O high perf.and allow it to sit bout 10 min. you can pump in enough till the res. level is just starting to rise.Remove the pump, replace the drain gasket/seal,and install the D.plug.Wait bout 1/2 hr. and top res.(some remove the vent plug on the upper, port side of the drive to speed up the drain tyme.)Check res.level after shakedown. No more air!

Tommays, I have a pre 1991 Alpha 1 Leg, I think early 80's & do not have access to a service manual here in Australia.Would appreciate access to an online manual like the one you mentioned in previous post. Thanks
