When you pulled the intake off, how did the alignment of the gasket to the coolant passages look. That is one area water might get into the oil. Also look at the block about 3/4" down from the head gaskets in the lifter valley, look for hair line cracks. It could be cracked and not be visable. Otherwise you need to do a leak down test to see if cylinder may have a crack.
Looks like a small block Chevrolet. I don't think those are factory holes, I had the intake off my 350 not that long ago and I don't remember seeing them. Looks like someone added them for extra drainage to the sump, looks like they may have been burned out with a torch. I don't see any harm in them being there.

I can't see any cracks under intake or on side of block
It was wintered with drain plugs removed.
There was 1/4 cup of water sitting in # 6 only after run on muffs this spring and a 16th inch gain of water on the dip stick.
There was no water external to the block while running it-- and it still purred like a kitten.
Compression was low on 6 & 8 only 60 lbs 120 on all the rest
I can't do leak down the head is off.
It is obvious that water is isolated to mostly 6 and a little of 8 because the exhaust manifold is rusted there and the water was sitting it it @6 exhaust port as well as on top of the piston.
The intake valve seems to have more rust on the top than the exhaust valve.
I did not removed the head on the one side their is no problem over there.
The head gasket did not have an obvious leak.
I was thinking about just changing the top end gasket set $100 and putting it back together.
It would cost me about another $150 to have the exhaust manifold, intake and head checked @ a rebuild shop.
Some on the forum say to plug the water outlet hoses-->pressurize the block with water or air @ 15lbs-->see if it will hold. I was trying to visualize a way hardware wise to do this.
The odd thing is the obvious isolation of the problem to #6 this leads me to believe it is a head gasket or head, but my knowledge is limited.
