I recently bought a 1990 Rinker 206 Captiva I/O with a 5.7L Merc engine. When turning on the blower, it begins to screech, like the bearing is locking up. Any ideas? Im not sure even where to look or how difficult it is to replace if thats the problem. Im new to this so any help would be great!!

Replace it, it's almost dead.

Re: Blower Screech

Any suggestions of where to find one for a decent price and where the blower is located at?

Follow the screaching sound, you'll find it.
There are all kind of them, here at iboats is one place to find them, just go to the top of the page and click on marine store. In the search, type in Bilge blower

Follow the hose (dryer vent type)up from the bilge(under engine) and right to the blower..

As much as these bilge blowers see use, I'm surprized they don't use brushless (or at least coreless) electric motors. The electric motors used in these blowers are dime a dozen brushed motors made in bulk overseas.

The funny thing is.. I doubt there are ANY brushless 3 phase AC motors available for a bilge blower that are coast guard approved. A brushless motor is inherently safer than a brushed motor (no sparking at the brushes because there ARE no brushes)... Kinda like dealing with the FAA. Some suit always knows what's best for us

BTW, Don S is probably right, but I have had good luck with shooting some WD40 into the blower intake as I run the blower . . .

Edit: Save your impulses to tell me I'm about to burn up my boat and everyone else's in the Marina . . . I have only done this on the trailer with the engine off and the engine cover open. One shot, and I didn't have to do it again . . .

All I can do is tell you what happened to mine when it made the same noise on the blower unit, Our boat is a 91 I guess after the years being run the plastic fan slowly started working its way up the armature shaft(the only way I know to put it:)) and when it made that awful noise my wife turned it off while I was at the marina, After we got the boat home I went out and took off the blower unit and found the problem(showed the wife) and had the plastic fan off, inspected it, no cracks so I just shrugged my shoulders and pressed it on as hard as I could by hand and it is quieter than it has ever been sense we owned the boat, did squirt just a little WD40 on the shaft before doing so, have had the boat out 3 times sense and still a lot quieter and no problems sense (so far) maybe I just got lucky. Just wanted to share what happened thats all.>> Pat

Got nothing to do with the inner stuff. What happens is you get splash/spray in the side vents, and if you don't have a "loop" below the motor itself, the water (salt will do it MUCH quicker) gets at the outer bearing, and you can guess the rest. Blowers are cheap, yours is probably 3' hose, and Iboats has them for $25 or so. Anytime you hear a screech, and it aint a belt, some bearing is shot.

Re: Blower Screech

You can get power from your 12V boat battery to a brushless motor via a small speed controller , sort of a poor mans inverter.. It may be a waste of money though, if the motors are going bad from seeing water.. I have not had mine apart to look at the motor but most brushed motors use bushings on the output shaft, not bearings. Far cheaper to manufacture and much quicker to fail
