i pounded and pounded till i got good at pounding and hearing the different pitches .....i evan took it to 3 different professionals ,,,,,we came up with 1 place on the stringer were it was rotten and a small area on the transom ......well today i ripped up my floor structure and seen it all .....if you find any rotten ,,,ill wager you got alot more hidden ...........places that i hit with a hammer and sounded solid as a rock ,when cut open from the top were rotten as anything .....the floor that sounded solid as a rock ....when cut open ,i could rip some areas intopieces with my hands ....fiberglass that looked fully intact was infact having pin holes in it alowing water to bleed through[floor],,,,,

Percussion sounding is for use when you don't want to do destructive testing. It isn't perfect but most "professionals" have a better ear than the rest of us. Most "professionals" also know it isn't done on glass over wood except for delamination.

Has anyone ever tried or heard of using ultrasound for testing sub-structural components ? Just a thought.

yes thats true it only worked on delaminated areas....were the fibergass was actualy peeled away internuly from the wood

I wonder if you could get something like an electronic ajustable stud finder to pick up different densities in the underlying wood to identify rotted areas?

Rotton wood is like cockroaches, if you see one or two, its usually infested, glad you found out for sure, now just pull up yer sleeves Or pull down yer sleeves if ya don't wanna itch like crazy and start rippin. Once its all ripped out, the hard part is over. Goodluck to ya
