I have a 24' Wellcraft, 1999, cuddy, 250 HP, 5.7L Merc. It appears the water pump went out thus causing impeller to go thus the bearings went and then cracked head. My boat mechanic said that he could get me a Jasper remanufactured engine and install it for about $4,000.00 or I can get the new Merc installed for about $6,000.00. Is it worth paying the extra for Merc? How much does a boat depreciate with the original engine being replaced? I owe about $15,000.00 on it, should I just sell it with a blown engine and move on? Thanks,,Troy

i dont no the exact dollars of it BUT if you sell it not running you are going to get KILLED on resale value

if the motor is replaced correctly it should not hurt the value

tommays

I see no reason why a replacement engine would lower the resale value of the boat.

Had a similar thing happen to our boat. I went the Jasper route. Did the repower myself, took 3 full days of wrenching, but I completed the job for just over half of your $4k price tag. It was also a lot faster than waiting for the local “marine wrench” to fit it in his schedule. Stinks any way ya look at it, good luck.

troyboy, try to find a local machine shop that will re-work a short block for you, it will cost less than half of the jasper quote, and you will be able to shake his hand when it's done. ask some of the marina's what shop they use and go there.........

Wouldnt it be cheaper to rebuild the motor you have?

Options ...
1 I don't want to buy your very over heated motor in any state of rebuild.

2 Jasper does a good job on GM engines.I've had problems with some of their other motors.I'd go this way,but realize you are talking a rebuilt engine.

3 New Mercruiser motor in a 1999 24 boat. This sounds best to me.You have an expensive boat (24 foot)It is getting to be 7 years old,and a NEW motor sounds best.

4 if you had a 17 footer I obviously would post different.

DHP

Well if you think you may keep the boat for another 5 years or more then new motor might be worth it , but a remaned long block should do just as well its really up to you, just be sure which ever way you decide that you get a clear warrenty and a precise work order from a Authorized Marine wrench.

I changed my GM 5.0 with the jasper class II 350 and have been very satisfied. The big sale is their Warranty, check with others on the warranty of rebuilding your smoked engine (labor and parts) because you don't want to have to pay to have it pulled later because of a knuckle heads mistake. Jasper's standard engine has I think a 2 yr parts and labor warranty and the class II has 6 months labor and 1 year or 18 months parts. The local marina told me they prefer Jasper outdrives over Mercs because of the warranty.
Lawrence

Dang, six grand for a new engine from Mercruiser installed. The 250 is the carb'ed model and a easy change out. Drag that puppy on down to florida and I can beat it by a grand easy and everyone will be happy. No really, six grand is way too much for that engine installed. MPI would be another story. Or he's not able to buy direct and having to buy thru another dealer and everyone is making money off you.
