A repair shop has a 1991 DT 25hp Suzuki with a blown head gasket. Repair shop said past owner boated in very shallow water and clogged water intake. Didn't hear any device or see any lights indicating the motor was getting hot. Shop is going to replace gasket after having head milled. Piston's didn't seise(sp) or score the cylinder walls. If I were to purchase this motor what other problems could this motor have?

TTP

Re: Blown head gasket

The problems would've probably been staring at the mechanic with the head off. Look around for melted plastic and wires that may have melted to the block. Otherwise it sounds like it may have survived. I assume they're doing the water pump as well.

Re: Blown head gasket

Mine did the same thing. No cylinder damage evident at that time. Replaced the head gasket. About a year later it had scored the #3 cylinder bad eneough to need a sleeve. I think something came loose during the heat and water (steam) event. Get them to look at the top (head mating surface) of the block for flatness, my #2 sleeve was slightly proud of the block, I believe contributing to the poor clamping of the head gasket. What can you pick the motor up for? sleeve, (3) pistons, machine work, and gaskets and misc. cost me about $450.00. A running dt25c in my area will bring $1100-$1300. I wouldn't hesitate to put that amount into a broke motor, but unless the shop belongs to you, labor is the killer. The things are hard to find and tough as nails.

***Other problems***
oil injection line detioration (sp)
