Blown Motor, now what???

Well, had the boat on the water this morning and as soon as I put it in gear and gave it some power, it started spitting and backfiring through the carb and had no power. I couldnt get it above 9mph. The oil pressure was lower than normal (about 20psi according to the guage) and it sounded like the valves were tapping. I shut it down and gave the engine a visual check. Oil was good, carb was getting gas, wires were on spark plugs, etc. Fired it back up and now there was alot of smoke coming out of the breather tubes on the valve covers and the valve tapping was louder. Oil pressure was still low and now there was a deeper banging noise coming from the block. Figuring something internally let go, I got towed back and went home.

Question is.....is there a good place to go for reman. marine engines or should I attempt a rebuild myself? I'm pretty mechanically inclined but never attempted a motor rebuild before.

Re: Blown Motor, now what???

find a good machine shop that is fair .. i have learned in the last couple of years that there are far too many things inside the motor that have way too close tolerances for me to rebuild .. i used to think i could until i moved in next to a machine shop with an owner that is not only a mechanical engineer but a person who understands what the parts of the engine do as far as clearances when the engine begins to change temperatures ... my pistons in my engine had to be clearanced for the temperature my boat motor runs and not like a regular car engine ... boat runs cooler .. just do your research on who you choose and make sure they are reputable ... and ask questions if you dont understand .... most appreciate your trust but understand your concern

Thanks for the advice. I'll be checking machine shops this week. As far as the rebuilding process, though, did you handle that yourself after the block and heads were machined?

well as far as installing the heads , rocker arms and intake , oil pan ... you know the periferals, if you have the torque specs and sequence i say go for it , i would let them do the short block though and if you go with a flat tappet cam make sure you use oil with a zinc additive for breakin and do research afterwards for an oil that wont trash the cam and lifters .... i am using joe gibbs hot rod oil in mine as it has the old specs for flat tappet cams

Great advice from everyone! Thanks again. I checked the rapido website and I really believe that is the way to go. They really do have the best prices around!
