Hey Everyone,

how do i know if my power head is blown??

i have a 89 Merc 200 XL O/B.
should I hear a knocking noise all the time, meaning at idle, in gear etc. And can it come and go??

the reason, i ask is b/c last week i heard it knocking noise at idle and in neutral and today i heard nothing at all.
maybe the engine isn't dead after all??

thanks dualie.

Its toes up done!!
My mechanic came by to have a look and the overheat alarm element was faulty and did not tell me that the engine was overheating.. That being said, it caused major damage on the top two pistons on the block.
Not worth the repair, so I am dumping it and looking for used unit for next season!
Note: make sure your overheat element is really working!!!

Once again- Thanks again for everyones help and insight!

Don't dump the engine. You can sell it out for parts on ebay. Flywheels and lower units, reed cages, carbs....etc they are all worth money and people always need them. Your crank is probably good to go too. How's the block?

Block- won't know until i open her up. nothing siezed but one of the rings on the top piston is hosed... hopefully it didn't score the block too bad...

everything else appears to be a in great condition. a lot of new stuff was replaced in 2002- basically thier was a rebuild in 2002.
which fries me b/c essentially i had a newer engine and should have lasted a lot longer than it did.

need to look at all the parts and see what appears to be in good condition to sell.

should I still fog it and drain, refill the L/U if i can't get to it this fall?
still runs fine, just on 4 cyclinders only.
