Re: Blown stator on 1982 90hp v-4

I apologise for wasting your time and mine. My serious trouble is double firing and double reading on the tacho - same trouble "double" at two separate places - ignition and charging - probably one source; stator, battery charging is out.
That trouble is not in the book. I tried to see if any one experienced this before.

I've got my answer:
Blown stator charging coils distort magnetic field, reflects on ignition coils, power packs begin to stutter - engine loses power at higher rpm; at different timing base position stuttering changes and there are no high rpm, where power supply is more important for power pack.

I don't know of any bench test for the regulator, all are running load tests.

I would take a hard look at both regulator and rectifier once the new stator is installed to be sure that the charging system isn't overloaded and damaged again.

Did you call CDI to get that explanation of why the stator causes the double fire?

The tach failure is often the first sign of a charging system failure.

I seen many many Force double fires, all causes by a bad box, never a stator.

Your was a strange puzzle, wish I could have been there to see it.

how was the flywheel key when you took it off? I had this same exact problem and it turned out to be a sheared flywheel key

I will make a bench test on regulator connected to battery and charger for short ciscuit (-to yellow cable and + to yellow cable0. I tested rectifier.
I will make a test run with the new stator and check all units of charging.
I had the flywheel removed in winter and didn't look at stator only. The shear is fine.
I am told that double firing on spark plugs is normal with the magneto system.
I didn't call anyone about the problem. I figured it out when I was told that each spark plug fires at every 180deg. and about two different coils for different rpm for ignition, there actually is one coil and two cores - 1 power calbe to each power pack. So magnetic field is important.
I would never have done this, if there were someone to do it instead of me.
