Does anyone think the blue paint they have on demo props will affect performance. I was just thinking if it added to blade thickness. If not I want to buy one, so any info would help. thx

I can't see a few mils of paint making a difference.

I see the blue paint as just an identifier of a test prop.

+1 you will have more of a reduction in performance due to crud billed up then paint. Most all aluminum props are painted

Ok, so you guys dont see any problems, I was looking at a tempest plus. The guy said the paint would come off with use but idk. I also think there is a dull finish under the paint so Idk if that would affect anything either. thx guys

Ayuh,.... As noted above, neither the color of the paint, nor the number of coatin's will effect it's performance,...

Correct me if I'm wrong Bondo, but it has always been my understanding that real smooth surfaces are great to look at but bad for anything on a boat which is in the water. Folks like real shinny props because they look good but being so smooth create a slight drag due to surface tension. Shinny is good so you can see if a crack is starting to show but that's about it. A rough surface on your hull and prop (so long as it's not to rough, or barnacles and such) is good to break the surface tension. This is why racers use stepped hulls and never wax the bottom of the boat.

Do you mean like this one? No difference in performance. In fact, because it is a test prop, it is not finished as well as for sale props and there still is no performance difference.

Nope,... I ain't correctin' ya,....

That discussion runs 'bout like the typical Oil thread,....

It's also pretty much irrelevant, unless We're talkin' Racin' Boats,...

Our boats would never know the difference, 'tween a waxed hull, or sanded hull,...
Ditto the props,....

Most all of the Racin' props I've run across have been finely sanded, 'n never polished,...

According to Scott at Mercury Racing Propellers; There is no measurable difference in performance between a mat finish and the Pro finish (mirror smooth finish).

They are eventually moving to the Pro finish on all their props because it resists salt water better.

if the color bothers you then give it a light sanding and spray over it in a flat black or white spray paint

I was thinking of using paint stripper and a power washer on it, not sure if that will work but thats what I was going to try. It might rust then idk

Yamaha paints its stainless props, and aluminum props are always painted. Can't imagine it would make any discernible difference.

No need to go crazy because the first couple of times you run it almost any paint you put on will wear at the blade tips. SO: Lightly sand to give new paint a surface to adhere to, then prime and finish coat.

OR: Of course if money is no object, send it out to be powder coated in your desired color.

OR: if time is no object strip it and polish it to a mirror finish.

Ya, I guess ill have to see how much paint comes off. I dont think ill be happy untill I strip it. Blue + Black motor might bother me. At least I know it wont affect the performance. Appreciate all the help ;)

Now don't forget that Merc blue engines were built for more speed.

Merc painted the props blue to help designate the differences between demo props and sellable props under the prop demo program merc developed back in the late 90's.

The dealers that participated in the program were able to buy them at a discounted price over the standard SS props with an agreement not to sell them back then.
