Correct me if I'm wrong Bondo, but it has always been my understanding that real smooth surfaces are great to look at but bad for anything on a boat which is in the water. Folks like real shinny props because they look good but being so smooth create a slight drag due to surface tension. Shinny is good so you can see if a crack is starting to show but that's about it. A rough surface on your hull and prop (so long as it's not to rough, or barnacles and such) is good to break the surface tension. This is why racers use stepped hulls and never wax the bottom of the boat.

Our boats would never know the difference, 'tween a waxed hull, or sanded hull,...
Ditto the props,....
Most all of the Racin' props I've run across have been finely sanded, 'n never polished,...
