That is pretty bad that they would stretch a cable across the water without any warning or even looking to see if it was safe.

What the heck were they doing with those cables?

Ken
The Intracoastal Canal is a different world from what I'm used to - could be that cable-drawn ferries carry markings that boaters are expected to know about. Or not. I don't even know who has jurisdiction over boat traffic there. Somebody around here probably knows.

Interesting though - how many of y'all wear crash helments to go fishing?
How many assume a boat crossing the channel would be dragging cables?

I was watching BassMasters a while back when they had a tournament in Louisiana, I think. Anyway, some of these guys were running over a 100 miles to fish.
Bet it was marked. Signs on the IC are large and set way ahead of the obstacle, so the large boats may take avoiding action.
Did not know that there were any cable ferries on the IC. They use the cables to pull back and forth, like a cable car. No Propellers. Sounds like he got to the cable as the ferry used it to stop at the landing; jerking the stern cable(s) out of the water
Been the last thing I would have thought of happening, unless I was familiar with the thing.
Where was this?
Any accident this bad should make us more aware of our actions.
Good Luck out there.
what would you consider a safe speed to pass in
this situation? I also may not have seen the cables,
but you can bet I would have been going too slow
to cause a serious accident like this, ESPECIALLY
if it was in unfamiliar waters.
safe boating,
M.Y.
Safe Speed-IDLE.

The IC can be a dangerous place. There are VERY large boats performing commercial duties. Not a place for a bass rocket, IMHO, unless the operator knows the rules of the road and local customs.

One must be wary, at all times, when around barges, ferries, etc.
Those cables will get you-my experience coming in with load of passengers after a day of bottom fishing, almost to the entrance of the bay when on radar two targets about 1/2 mile apart going outbound figured a couple of draggers cause targets fairly good size so went behind lead boat Oh yes heavy fog real heavy could not see either boat but had clear targets so could judge speed and position. I was going slow when this very large cable popped up in front of me, went to full reverse and got on channel 16 and cussed out tug who was pulling tow with no whistle signals did this after I got out of danger but really scared me, filed report with CG had plenty of witnesses.
During our fireworks display in our harbour here in Vancouver BC a tug towing a barge at night was heading to port. A pleasure craft decided to run in between the two and ended up killing 5 people I believe. The boat of course sank. Two were young kids.
