I JUST PURCHASED A USED PRO LINE BOAT AND THE PREVIOUS OWNER MADE A MESS OF THE WIRING. MY QUESTIONS ARE. SHOULD THE BOATS POWER DEVICES BE SEPARATED FROM THE ENGINE CONTROLS? THE PREVIOUS OWNER CAUSED THE CONTROL HARNESS TO THE ENGINE TO BURN UP BY PUTTING A WIRE TO THE POS TERMINAL OF THE BATTERY. THE WAY THE HARNESS TO THE MOTOR LOOKS IT SEEMS LIKE THE 12VDC IS SUPPLIED FROM THE CABLES GOING INTO THE ENGINE, SO I'M THINKING THE MOTOR CONTROLS SHOULD BE SEPARATE, IS THIS CORRECT.

[colour=blue]Depends.

When you say 'motor controls' I assume you are talking about the ignition.

Some accessories need to be powered by the ignition 'on', these would need to be connected to the ignition wiring.

For the ones that don't need ignition wiring - the most common way to power up 'add ons' is to run a positive wire from the batt up to the helm into a buss bar/fuse panel & run a new ground wire from the battery up to the helm into a buss bar (some buss bars accomodate both positive and ground). All accessories are then connected to the buss bars. A suitable fuse or curcuit breaker should be used at the battery end.

Wire size etc should be calculated depending on what amperage you will need (the bigger the better, make it future proof).

Re: BOAT AND ENGINE WIRING

if you have the manual for the engine
Look in the electrical schematics there is a map of how it all works.
when I got my boat everything was totaly disconnected
I hooked everything up one at a time this way
