It's hard to say how far back is good. But you can always move forward some if it fails the armstrong test.

I just started back at the gym. Pulled a muscle in my lower back in September leg pressing close to 300#. Spent more then a few days on the floor waiting for my wife to get home so I could have my pain meds. GA good point as long as I don't bust out my welder I'll be fine.

Being honest you need to look out for a newer trailer that looks workable. Nice boat and motor and risky trying to fix the old trailer. Scare me to death to go out each time and hope I do not have a disaster with the trailer. My Gramps always said if things work its because you have a good foundation. think he ment boats and trailers to. Good luck. I would move it no further than 2/3 the way back if thats what you want to do. I would be afraid to put to much strain on the front with to much weight it may breah in half .lol

I understand what you are saying, but this is the one that I have now. I just need it to work better then it is. The thing is solid. It's made out of 3/16 angle and 1/4 wall tube. If need be I'll just make it longer. It's nice having a metal shop. Worst case I'll just sell it and the boat and get a newer one. I would like to find a starcraft ss with that open bow.

No one can really say how far back you need to move the axle, you will need to do some measurements and figure it out. You will need to know how much the entire rig weighs and then figure out the 10-15% tongue weight. I would place the tongue on a bathroom scale, remove the tires and place jack stands under the frame to simulate where the axle needs to be centered. Keep moving the jack stands further back until you get 10-15% of the rig's weight on the tongue, then you will know where the axle needs to be centered.

When mounting the axle, it needs to be squared up off the tongue's ball mount, not the trailer frame (IE: frame could be out of square). Attach a pin to the center of the ball mount, so you have something to measure from, then make sure each side of the axle is exactly the same measurement to the ball mount. Removing the grease dust cap and measuring off the axle end itself would be best, but you could also rotate both hubs into the same position and measure off the center of a wheel stud.

I like that idea using the jack stands to find the new spot for the axle.

Jack stands are a great idea. Good thinking fish. As long as they clear your springs.

Re: boat and trailer fish tail

My boat is a 66 16' starcraft and every time I have towed it it has been nerve racking. The first time it swayed so bad that I had to keep it under 35mph. The next time I moved the fuel tanks under the bow and the kicker at the mid point of the boat. I was able to do 40mph and if the road was smooth 45mph. The axle is on the trailer is in the center of the boat. I have room to move it back 1-1.5ft. Would this help? It seems to me that most of the weight is near the transom. The motor is a 68 merc 500 @ approx 240LBS. The whole boat with out the motor is around 500lbs. This should put the CG near the last 1/3rd of the boat. As it sits right now I can pick up the tongue with one arm.

That 2nd pic really shows how far that axle is forward.

It needs to move back 10" to a foot or so.

Re: boat and trailer fish tale.

As a test tonight before I went to the gym I had my 8 year old try and pick up the front of the trailer. He did with out a problem. Not saying that he didn't have to put some effort into it, but it wasn't to hard for him.

You should post this over in the trailer/towing section. There are some experts that can prolly give you a formula to calculate how far back you should move that axle.

Holy Cow.....maKing this more complicated than it has to be - extra tongue weight won't hurt anything than your rear shocks....if your kid can pick it up it is way too light....from the looks of it just loosen up the U bolts and move the wheels back until it is tough for YOU to pick up the tongue - I guarantee you will be all set.

Re: boat and trailer fish tale.

The guy that came to pick up my other boat took a look at it. He said that if it was him he would move it back about another foot. The reason that I posted it where I did Bandit is that I feel that the fine people that own Starcraft boats would be more help then other less fortunate souls that have heavy fiber glass boats.

Re: boat and trailer fish tale.

you have a point there The Aluminum boats are so light up front the axel needs to go back further. Most trailers are set with glass boats in mind. I picked up a 21 ft Lund in flathead lake Montana and delivered it to a local dealer., Near Seattle Wa. I had to adjust the axel three times to get it to to track right. Fellow never towed it anywhere so had no idea it was not set right.
