boat capsized

Hi,
Took the family out camping this weekend... Long story short, My 18" Sea ray
with i/o 3.0 capsized while anchored off Island. My boat is still in the saltwater because it was to windy for any salvage attempts until possibly tommorrow. Now, any experience with getting running would be useful. I have found alot of outboard success stories and nothing on io.

Bummed out,
Thanks

Re: boat capsized

If the boat really flipped all the way over, with salt water in the carb and intake, I cant imagine a happy ending for the engine, and much of the electronics. How did this happen? huge wind?

Welcome to iboats......:)
HMMMMM......:(
You won't know how bad it really is until you right the boat.....
At minimum I would bring enough gas to get home & enough oil to refill the crankcase.....;)
I would check oil level, fuel level, pull the plugs, spin the engine & if the plugs/cylinders are dry, see if it will start......
An extra battery would not hurt either.....
Good Luck!.....:)

If it's electrical, it's junk. You have only a couple of hours to get the engine drained and running before rust destroys it.
Pull the outdrive first and let the water out of the bellows. Put the drive back on. Then suck the water out of the oil as best you can. Pull the plugs, and crank the engine (use a cheap automotive starter and new battery if necessary. Warm the engine. Now , time to drain the oil and change it and the filter........... several times. Using a couple quarts of diesel fuel instead of oil to help get the water out.
You have only a few hours, get busy.

Re: boat capsized

Thanks for the fast replies-
The boat was achored offshore and large waves came over the bow and before I could free the anchor - it was sunk.

Don- thanks for the reply- I know I will need to respond quickly to the motor.
Should I get the motor running before removing the outdrive? Should I remove the carb or will it just drain into the engine when cranking over?

Thanks again!!!

Reread your reply, sorry I read it fast the first time. Remove outdrive first and reinstall. Is ATF a better detergent than diesel?
Thanks

Ayuh,....

Diesel works pretty Good,.... But I wouldn't go over 20% at a time...
That'll be 1 qt. of Diesel to 4 qts. of Oil...

Re: boat capsized

if the battery switch was on your cable ends will be fried, remove the starter, dissasemble and clean it, remove the carb, flush it well, remove the dist cap and clean out the dist, clean and rinse the alternator or have a shop rebuild it, remove the drive, inspect the ujoints and gimbal area, they will be junk sooner or later.
sunk boats really bite. just remember saltwater is a good conductor as well as a corrosive.
if you apply power to an electrical device that has saltwater in it it shorts.
then the smoke gets let out of the circuits.
the bellows area will be full of water, the ujoints and gimbal bearing are toast, my first concern would be the shiney machined parts inside the engine.
get it restarted, run it for at least 1 hour to clear the water keep an eye on the engine oil color change it as nessasary then on to the drive.
I hope you had your rig insured.

Re: boat capsized

Did it capsize or sink?

There is a difference. By your post it sounds more like it sank.

Re: boat capsized

Thanks again for the responses.
Update: The Gulf was still to rough this morning to attempt a salvage. The wind has died down finally, my friends are going out to see if they can turn it over and pump out enough water to tow back to marina. I am in Pasco,Fl
Anclote Island is where I was camping out on the Gulf side. My fear of the boat being beaten on by waves all night is a bummer. I should hear soon the
condition of the boat.

Re: boat capsized

It must be sunken by now no?

2 or 3 days upside down and floating is pretty amasing if you ask me.

Man this sounds like a lot of work it may be easier to just repower with a nice 4.3 when its all said an done.

Wow,
I am pretty close to you (St. Pete). Sorry to hear of your bad luck. I am far from an expert but have some mechanical background. Yell if you need a helping hand with anything.

Is your I Boats working correctly. I am not receiving any new posts in my email box on Forums I have subscribed to. It stopped two days ago when I Boats went down for maintenance.

Re: boat capsized

sorry about you luck man, but you are defenantly going to have to drain all your fluid and dry everything out real good, probably have to do something with the carbs. As for the electrical I believe they make something that you can spray on and it drys it out, available at any parts store. Would use ATF or Diesel to clean the engine out. Anything with a lot of detergent in it. Good Luck
