Re: Boat carpet replacement

Trooper,

I have just seen the snap in carpet as an option in some new boats (especially deck and bass boats). I've been doing some research and found that we will probobly have to measure and and cut ourselves, then have carpet shop trim out the edges. We will then have to install the snaps to the carpet and deck of the boat deck. I found this site for the snaps. http://www.atrim.com/indexs.html
Not sure of the best way to adhere the snaps to the deck; epoxy or the snaps that screw in. Good luck and let us know what you decide and how it goes. I don't plan on tackling this project until sometime this winter.

SS182

Re: Boat carpet replacement

I did mine in two halfs. Marine carpet at the front in the clean dry areas, and a tread grip paint in the rear blood & guts area. Then over the top of that with a marine carpet not glued. When the mess gets too bad I lift out the mat, hose out the floor and the mat gets a hose down and hung out to dry. Should have done it years ago.

Re: Boat carpet replacement

I just recently added a platform at the back of my Bass Tracker 2, The original carpet in the boat is a brown astro-turf type that has held up extremely well for nearly 20 years. Have never had and don't plan on replacing it anytime soon. And the boat has been outdoors the entire time.

I built the platform out of 3/4" steel tubing in two pieces and used 5/8" painted plywood as the flooring. I was then able to find some Brown astro turf carpet at a discount carpet outlet that almost matches perfectly to the original. I paid about $80 for a 6'x12' piece, more than enough for the job. Glued it down to the plywood and stapled the carpet around the edges, man it looks good. Put some hinges on the back so I can still get access to the batteries and tanks, have a hole where the two pieces meet to allow the back seat pedestal to come up above the platform.

Anyway, my point is that I really think that astro turf carpet (good quality/dense stuff) is very durable and color fast resistent, and is also resistent to hooks. If you find a color you like, I can't imagine you going wrong with it. Most boat manufacturers quit using it years ago because the new marine carpet is cheaper in cost, however I don't think it is better in quality at all.. Just my .02...

Re: Boat carpet replacement

Thanks for all the replies, I've narrowed it down between the carpet and the astro turf. How does the edges on the astro turf come out looking? Do you have to trim around the edges with some type of dressing (ie. metal trim)? The carpet with the rubber backing looks like it would trim out better but I think the astro turf would last longer.

TRP251

Re: Boat carpet replacement

Trooper,

Normally when using astro turf or even marine carpet the edges are covered or tucked under some sort of trim or more regularly wrapped around the floor or side boards so they are never seen.. At least in my boat they did this.

There are a couple of places on my boat where they did meet up two edges together at a corner of side platform. And they did eventually frey a bit but not bad, a little glue did the trick...
I haven't used the marine carpet, but I would expect the same or worse type of edge appearance/frey tendencies on it as Astro Turf...
Normally you would never want edges visible and subject to traffic...

This is what I'm dealing with:

the carpet has no molding or trim around it. the copper colored trim is actually the deck which is raised slightly to provide an edge. so I'm not sure if the new carpet's edge will show or not.

TRP251

I think with either type of carpet, you're going to be fine...Just a good bond near or at the edge will do the trick in your case....
Just remember if you go with astro turf, make sure you get good quality stuff.
A good marine carpet would really look good on your boat since that was what originally was installed, maybe the best out of the two choices....

Re: Boat carpet replacement

KCLOST,

Thanks for the great replies. I am leaning towards the carpet at this point. I think it might be easier to work with. I will probably start with the compartment lids, where I can remove them and then tackle the decks after I finish the sanding and clear coat.I would like to put a lighter color of carpet in it, like a tan maybe, but I'm afraid of it staining. The lighter color would be cooler though. That would be an advantage to the astro turf. I could put a lighter color on and not have to worry as much about the staining.

Thanks Again,
TRP251

Re: Boat carpet replacement

Trooper,

I don't know what kind of glue you are planning on using, a good spray adhesive like 3M Super77 is great stuff, kind of expensive but specially designed for adhering fabric/carpet to something...

I also have several unused Tubes of 3M Scotch-Grip Plastic Adhesive 1099. I work for a Furniture Manufacturing Company and can get my hands on a few things every once in a while.. This stuff will work great for bonding the edges of the carpet... Are you interested in some, just have to pay the shipping.... Good stuff, resistent to water, fuel, oil.....
