I now have a used 20ft Godfrey which badly needs a good cover. i will most likely make a support frame as I have done with my other boats. I have no experience with toons so any suggestions would be most welcome.

Mine is a snap down type with 3 "tent poles" to hold it up through the center. Each pole inserts in a plastic holder which doubles as a vent. Works well!. Whatever you end up with, it is important to have it vented to reduce mold growth.

Thanks jeep man.
Sounds like yours is custom made but a great idea. Does it stand up to the weight of a couple of inches of snow.

A couple of inches would be OK, but I have to contend with several feet of snow. For winter, I remove the cover and replace it with a wood frame made from 2x4 and a large tarp.

A couple of years ago I started out with one of those tarps that you get at lowe's I paid something like $90.00 for a 16x 30 ft.It waseasy to put on and with the wooden frame I could almost put it on by my self. Then last year I got one of those expansive tarps over the internet. It came from a factory custom built. Made of canvas. I has to buy the alumn. poles seperatly. So last winmter we put it on the pontoon boat. What a job that was, The thing weighed a ton.It almost fit too. It was just a little bit to big. The straps were to short. and every time it rained no matter how tight it was it always formed a pocket and filled up with water. So now that warm weather is here I'm back to using thwe plastic cover.and That's what I will use next winter.I paid over $500.00 for the canvas cover and it will never be used on my boat again.

I'm back to my $47.00 tarp from WalMart and old tent poles. The expensive fitted cover I bought leaked like a sieve and has a 3' tear in it..... it's not even 9 months old yet.

One more guy here who bought a $100 to $150 "universal" cover (ebay special) that doesn't fit and is impossible to get tight. It takes 3 men and a boy to put it on and if fits terribly. I will use it this year because I just bought it and when it is NFG I will go back to a $20 tarp and bungee cords.

If you have the $$$ for a custom fitted cover they are great, otherwise I would stick to a tarp.

Re: Boat cover for toon.

I've got the custom snap on cover with poles like jeep man (just the play pen) but I don't use it for winter (lot's of snow" and I've been told you can't trailer with it. So last year I bought a 20x10' temporary garage - worked ok with a few modifications and we had a very heavy snow fall this year - but it was still $150 on sale. I just bought a "semi custom fit" cover off of ebay for $160 and it's on the way - supposed to be trailerable, I'll let you know if it's any good after a few highways trips LOL. I suspect it may not be - but we will give it a shot.
good luck

Re: Boat cover for toon.

I make custom covers in the southern Illinois area. It is reinforced with a material that is very strong. It comes with poles and vents and will hold up to several inches of snow. Snow should always be knocked off when possible to prevent buildup and damage to the cover. Canvas from sunbrite or sunguard or coastguard is the best and can last up to 15 or 20 years if taken care of. Keep it clean and water proof it after about 6 or 7 years every couple years or so. It is warranted for 5 years. I have covers that I made about 14 years ago or so and they are still in use. Some covers are made too low and cause water pooling. Taller covers shed better if kept tight. The back is hardest to prevent pooling. Put a inner tube or float in the rear corners to help this problem. If you live in the southern Illinois area I can make you one custom made to fit your boat. My customers love my covers. pageupholstery@yahoo.com 618-988-1726

Late last fall we had an early snow that caused one of our trees to snap, bye orginal cover, torn it all to hell but no damage to the toon. In a hurry I ordered one that same day from Amazon for 92.00, I figured it will get me through the winter. To my surprise this is a really good cover, has had 3-4 inches of wet snow on it and held up, but the best part is that there is zero mold spots and the cover has been on since Nov 20. With the Tracker snap down cover I would have to take the cover off on a warm winter day at least twice(durning the winter) and clean the seats so that mold didn't start. This cover says that it is breathable so I guess it is working. there is no mold anywhere even where the cover touchs the seats, here is a link to one, not the exact one that I bought but I think it is the same company

I had a custom sumbrella cover made the way I wanted it and yes it did cost me a bit but think of it like this the cover is the garage your boat sits in most of the time and over the winter it had up to 1 foot of snow on it and many many rains and storms and so far its done what I expected of it. You can do other things but it all ways takes a lot more work and a lot more time.

I saved my orginal cover since it was ripped on a seam from side to side, and I am pretty sure that it can be used as a template. Will have a new one made soon but since the one I bought is working fine there is no real hurry. The orginal was on a 2000 Suntracker, I think that they have better materials now as far as breathability, as I said there is zero signs of mold with the new cover and with the orginal little spots would start to appear after a couple months during the winter, never stained anything but it is nice not to have any at all now. I think in part is that they say that it is breathable, it sure is brighter under the cover than it was with the orginal, make also play a part

Re: Boat cover for toon.

I got a nice white super duty tarp off a guy who used it a liner for a little ice skating area. Using it as a full cover since my boat is out of the water now. But i plan on building a pvc frame to support the tarp, then cutting it to size and using a grommet kit to install new grommets on the cut side. Then just use some strong bungees or straps and should have a nice cover.
I would recommend a heavy duty tarp if you are going to use one of the inexpensive blue ones they tent to fall apart int he sun and weather after a while and you will have little blue bits of tarp all over the place
